I like it when my husband goes away on business trips. I forget about cooking real dinners, let this dishes pile up in the sink and watch HGTV in bed. How about you? http://www.carolband.wordpress.com
I like when I have the house to myself for a few hours...like on Sundays when he's playing football and the kid is working. But I hate when he has to travel for work; I just don't sleep as well when he's not there.
Right now my husband is away for a whole year. There are certainly times when I wish he was home so I could get a 5 minute break away from the kids, have somebody help out with the household chores and maybe even go to the bathroom by myself ... oh what a luxury that would be, but no matter how much he's missed, I do have the luxury of not having anyone rolling their eyes at me for being on the computer too much. The kids don't care if the house isn't immaculate and they think I'm the best mum ever on mac & cheese or chicken nugget night :).
I didn't like it when my kids were young. But now that they are away at college, I love having the house to myself. I can just eat cereal for dinner and watch anything I want and spend as much time on the computer as I want without hearing complaints. My husband doesn't travel that often, so maybe that's why I enjoy the occasional break. It might be different if he traveled all the time.
I love the short trips. My son and I eat whatever crazy combo we want, let the dishes wait, I pamper myself with a bath and some me time after the kiddo's in bed. But with the longer trips, only the first few days are fun. Then it starts to wear on me. Like this week when snow shoveling became necessary several days in a row, and a bat got in the house (these things always happen when he's away)!
I get all sorts of chores done and things I normally don't get to do, like volunteer work at the animal shelter. I alos do home repairs and such when he isn't around. WHen he is around, he wants to be involved and he is Tim "the toolman" Taylor, while I am Al Boyland...the brains behind the brawn...lol! Plus the house stays clean too! LOL I can also watch what I want and do as much work as I want on my business. It is nice at times, but I love my hubby to pieces and wouldn't trade him in for the world.
I love it, too! I take command of the TV and sit up at night watching a "chick flick." I get fast food for the kids for dinner. I hate to say it, but it's just a more relaxed atmosphere when he is gone. I'm sure it would get tough if he were gone all the time, but for the occasional times when he's gone, we relish it!
It would be nice if my husband took a trip every now and again, just to have the opportunity to miss him. We both work from home so there isn't that much time apart, other than if one of us has to run errands or if I have an event to attend, which is only a couple of hours. I am thankful and fortunate that we get to be together, but it would be nice to see him go snowboarding for a weekend with the guys - just to have a chance to miss him.
When my husband is away, I rent all the chick-flicks he doesn't want to watch. I also let the kids sleep with me, so that I'm not in bed alone and they get to look forward to something special. And I will often take them to Chuck E Cheese (he HATES that place!).
My husband is away for 3 days, which doesn't happen all that often, so I'm enjoying the time like some others out there. I love the man, but I also love my alone time. I can read as much as I want and rent the videos I want to watch. Like so many others, the dinners in our house get very simplified when he's away. My kids and I just got back from 2 hours at McDonalds! I got to read my book while the kids ate dinner and ran themselves out in playland. Now they are safely tucked in and I can do whatever I want with my time. It seems like a luxury. I also agree with the whole "give me time to miss you theory". It's nice to think about all the things you love and appreciate about them while they are away and them have a nice reunion when they come home! :)
I stay up too late watching TV (& sneaking ice cream after 7pm - egads!) -- and my kids and I often have silly meals or eat out. And I spend way too much time on the computer!
My husband travels a few times a month and I like having the house to myself but not for too long. The kids and I do whatever we want. The only drawback is that he usually cooks so when he's gone, I have to pick up the cooking. But that's easy - pasta or chicken nuggets for the kids and a big salad for me. Or even cereal! If he's gone over a weekend, I let one of the kids sleep with me. It's a special treat for them. Sometimes things go wrong when he's gone - one time the house got sprayed by a skunk. That wasn't fun. We sure do appreciate him more when he gets back!
