Which child-safety gates are the best?

We purchased an extra-tall Dream Baby gate from Babies 'R Us, and really like them for the top of our stairway. Now my son is fascinated by climbing our stairs, and I need a gate at the bottom. It's an old house, so there's a plaster wall on one side and a 4-5" wide banister on the other. I'd like a tension fit rather than drilling into the banister. Does anyone else have a similar situation, or a gate that they've loved?

Hi Kara,

My brother's house sounds similar to your situation and they only put a gate at the top of their stair. However, they wish they had a gate at the bottom because my sis in law is constantly pulling their 1 year old off the staircase! Check out http://www.kidproteq.com/Home-Safety/Gates-c23/. Kidproteq has a number of pressure mounted gates and maybe one that could work for your bottom of your stairway. Use MySafeKid609 to get 15% off your order. Good luck!

Kara- I got some information from a professonal babyproofer... She said that using a pressure gate assumes that it will be mounted in a straight line, no angles or offsets between the wall and the banister. If you want an another extra tall gate that is pressure mount for the bottom of the stairs, the Kidco G16 is a great gate with extensions available, otherwise you can check out any one of Kidco’s pressure mount gates: G15 Center Gateway or brand new Premier Gateway. Extensions for widths over 37” are available for either of these. As for the banister, depending on the set-up. If the banister is square, top and bottom, there should not be a problem. If the banister is ornate or round top and bottom, you might be want to have a professonal babyproofer come to your house for a consultation. Check out www.iafcs.org to find a babyproofer in your area. BTW- The Kidco gates come with a pressure gauge and insure a great installation.
