twitter moms: the influential moms network

Why do you tweet on Twitter?

  • Rating: 4.8 after 5 votes
Today as I browsed through all the Twitter posts, I came across @chrisbrogan discussing why tweeps use Twitter. Is it just to drive traffic to your blog/website, is it all about how many tweeps are following you, is it to connect with other like-minded individuals or something completely different?

I'll start it off by saying that I started tweeting on Twitter to connect with high profile mom bloggers to help promote my newly created blog. This newly created blog was established to help build traffic to my website. It didn't take long though for me to discover that on Twitter, you can chat with just about anyone. Long time friends, new friends, businesses, celebrities, reporters and so on.

I tweet on Twitter to build friendships, network, promote my business as well as other businesses, share news and make tweeps laugh.

Great topic, Julie! I'd say that while Twitter is a great way to "drive traffic" the magic really happens when you focus on making great connections with like-minded folks. I really enjoy my twitter stream and obsess over what everyone is talking about while standing in checkout lines and other idle places where I get a moment of peace.

I really feel a connection to the people who show up in my flow, even though now I have so many people that my view of Twitter is really warped (given 6,000 or so Twitter friends). I don't recommend that many connections on Twitter, by the way. It gets unmanageable and most are really relationships that are worthy of nurturing through dialog -- which in my case can alienate people with noise. But, it's clear there are reasons I'm connected to these women and I find what they have to say (and the conversations they're engaged in) interesting. It's a source of entertainment, and more often than not, news.

It started off as a way to get traffic to my blog... then I realized how powerful it really was becoming. I now use it to connect with High Profiles as well as just chitchat with everyone. The bigger your network of like minded individuals becomes the more JV potential you have in your arsenal!

What a fabulous topic. I Twitter to get: news/politcs, to see who is making what, to laugh out loud, to get tech news, to study/research the handmade movement, to keep up with updates from artisans I love, to laugh out loud, to share my knowledge, to market my shop, to keep up with local happenings, to hear what Zappos, Willie, and Barack have to say. Not to mention GwenBell, and my fellow etsy sellers. It is fun, quick, and hilarious!

Oh my goodness -- while I tweet on Twitter for potential business reasons, the bottom line is that I LOVE the connection. I love the connection with people from every walk of life, from many nations, of many ages. I love the connection with current events.

I still can't believe that I found out about the crash of Flight 1549 within minutes because someone I'm following tweeted that a plane was going down right outside his window. I felt like I was there --- in the apartment building on the Hudson.

Yes, I have a blog which needs a lot of work. When the blog is finished, my Twitter use will shift a little more toward business. In the meantime, I am thriving on the joy of meeting new people all the time and finding out what they are doing every day. For me, the "social" part of Twitter will always be the most important.

I too joined initially to drive traffic. But in response to my mom when asked "what the heck that twitty stuff you're doing? are they all talking to you?" I did my best to explain,

"Mom, it's kind of like my online cb radio... lots of people with different handles chatting on 'my channel', sometimes i'm talking to someone in particular but usually i'm just listening and finding out some great things, like this deal on shoes..."

then i clicked the link and showed her the shoes.... she just about lost her mind with lustys for those hot shoes!

Lisa that's a great analogy of Twitter! Many, many years ago, I used to listen to my dad and mom chat away on their CB. That was so Twitter back in the dark ages! LOL! Love it!

A friend got me into it; he was the first person I followed, along with actor Wil Wheaton, whose blog I read regularly. I follow a lot of the bloggers I read on Twitter, and also enjoy keeping up with a couple of news feeds. The reason I tweet is mostly to fire off random thoughts that aren't enough to make a blog entry from, or things I might want to remember for future entries. I also have it linked to my blog so my feed includes updates from my blog & my Squidoo lens, and I also have the feed linked to Facebook so my Twitter updates become my FB status updates. So it's kind of a way to bring different parts of my internet life all together!
