Will you be sending out Christmas cards this year?

  • Rating: 3.5 after 3 votes
With Christmas fast upon us, will you be sending out Christmas cards? I always find them to be a waste on so many levels: time and supplies, yet I've sent them out in the past. What are your thoughts? Do you enjoy receiving them?

Yes, we always do cards...occasionally homemade, but not this time. Sometimes with, and sometimes without, a photo. Send out about 50 or so. This year instead of sending out photos of us, will be sending some people photos of themselves from years gone by...a blast from the past. We vertically hang those we receive from wide plaid ribbon...the photo cards are taped directly to the wall, and those cards get scrapbooked. The others I should probably pitch...have them going back way too long. The kids used to make collage placemats out of them. I save the Christmas letters from family that have genealogy-related information, ie: we visited such-and-such a place, where great-grandpa Smith was born.

Last year, I did all digital cards and a newsletter via email. I'll probably do the same thing this year.

Yep...I only have to buy an envelope and postage...

I think Christmas cards are an important ritual and I relish them this year in particular. I just got remarried. I was married to someone who didn't like the holidays that much and I did almost everything myself. My new husband loves the holidays and we love doing things like this together.
The more you send the more cards you get. Getting cards gives me a feeling of having friends and family who are close. If you don't like getting cards, don't send them and you drop off people's list. Holidays could be lonely around the holidays when I was single and didn't have my son. I wish I'd kept up writing them.
There are ways to avoid waste, but I'm not cutting the cards. Not this year or any other.

I saw in Parents magazine that one family adds the cards to the tree instead of ornaments. The family felt that it was safer for their little one than the traditional ornaments. I also make them into homemade puzzles,

I definitely agree with the enjoyment of receiving pictures from our family and friends, but once I've read the card, I never know what to do with it. In the past I've lined them up on the mantle, then toss them into recycling. Does anyone have any interesting ideas on how to display their holiday cards?

I find that sending Holiday Cards is not only a great way to let friends and family know that you are thinking of them and showing off your little one, but its also a great business networking tool. I love letting my business contacts into my life through these somewhat personal cards (just a family photo and well wishes). I've received great feedback from contacts who truly appreciate the thought.

I'm definitely going to send cards out in hopes that maybe I'll get at least 2 or 3 this year. I don't know why but everyone I know never takes the time to do it, not even my own mom. I remember waiting for cards to show up when we were little and it was always exciting to me to see how many we could get to put around the door frame. This is going to be my son's first Christmas so I won't be skimping on anything. I'm really excited to finally have a family of my own and start making my own traditions.

Btw, I always purchase a few boxes of cards after Xmas for the following year. You can find the really nice ones for up to 75% off most of the time and as far as saving time, I made up a list of names and addy's a few years ago that are all ready to print out onto labels.

I love getting Christmas cards! Sometimes it's the only recap I get from more distant friends and relatives. We usually do a family picture with a personal note. We don't really do the 'family newsletter', although I do enjoy reading the ones I get.

Yes, we will be sending out Christmas cards like always. It's just a "tradition" at our house....getting dressed up and deciding on a pose or the best shot. Sometimes we have them done professionally and sometimes just a snapshot will do, but normally it's always in front of the tree. There was one year that we didn't send them and that was the year my husband's dad died. I think everyone understood.

Also, I know alot of local people contribute to our Goodfellow's organization "in leiu of Christmas cards." I think that's a neat idea, too.

Please visit me at www.thehortonfamily.blogspot.com. I love to meet new people.

I think Sending Christmas cards are a form of thoughtfulness of others and not necessarily whether you like to, want to. If you can't afford that is another whole story, as with economy I know people are cutting back and even resorting to E-cards. However people send them, it's a very thoughtful act. I love to received them them especially frriends/from H/S 20 yrs ago, or those who have been transferred to another city....although we've lost touch through out the year it's wonderful to receive their Christmas cards/letters and pics of kids...and seeing them all grow up every year. Keep it coming I say, and I'll keep sending them as well! ;)

Great ideas! That definitely gives them a more front and center importance!
