twitter moms: the influential moms network

Ugghh..I almost hate to start this discussion but it is something that has hit me very hard this year.

I've been hit with bad headaches, brain fog (big problem) and of course the dreaded weight gain. I am going to get my my hormone levels tested, just to be sure, and have an appointment to see my doctor (especially because of the frequent headaches.)

Anyone else experiencing perimenopausal symptoms?

Okay,
So I went for blood work on Tuesday and my GYN called with results today (of course I was not home but she left some info.) My blood work "looks pretty normal". NORMAL, IS SHE CRAZY???????????? Or perhaps I'm crazy. I nearly cried when I heard the message. I feel like crap, I have horrible sleep, I'm gaining weight in the middle, I generally only feel "civil" (and I use the term loosely) one week out of the month. If I'm not perimenopausal, please tell me what the *()&& is wrong with me???

My GYN won't be back in the office until Tuesday. I will surely try to touch base with her, but Holy Crap, this can't be all!!

Progesterone cream helps with my heavy bleeding, but nothing seems to be helping with my sleep, my irritability, weight gain and generally feeling like crap. I have to follow up with my GYN on Tuesday and I hope she has some suggestions.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to pop back in and let you know that I had surgery yesterday to get a uterine polyp removed. My symptom of this was primarily non-stop discharge/bleeding. I had to wear a panti liner every day for the last 6 months or so. I was, of course, concerned about cancer because that is also one of the symptoms.

Be sure if you are experiencing this to get checked out by your doctor. I am hoping that the polyp removal will eliminate the bleeding and the progesterone cream will continue to help with the hormonal imbalance symptoms. If only I could figure out how to lose these 20 pounds....

Okay, You've got to get a load of this!!!
As you may recall from my March 27th post, My OB called back with my lab results and I wasn't home. Called her on 3/31. She tells me that my labs look "pretty normal". My DHEA and Testosterone were on the low end of normal. Her recommendation: that I go to the store and buy some DHEA. I was totally flabbergasted!!! Not only did she not reschedule me (I had a whole list of things that I wanted to discuss!!) she basically told me to self treat.

After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I consulted with a hormone clinic in town. They would be able to help but it would be totally out of pocket to the tune of $795 plus supplements. I went back to my chiropractor, who had been treating me and she does do bioidentical hormones. She's started me on a regimen (Estrogen supplements, Progesterone tabs and cream, adrenal complex and prenatal vitamins for the folate and Stress B complex) and in one day, I fell less fatigued and I don't ache. She is even addressing my fibroids by having me do castor oil packs. I am to follow up in 5 weeks and I am pretty sure that I am going to be feeling better.

I am so angry at our healthcare system. They want you to be half dead before they treat you and then they want to prescribe medications that often leave you feeling worse than before you started. I so want to be able to affect healthcare policy. We have to be about PREVENTIVE health and not trying to fix it once it's broken.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox. I'll keep you all posted.

I'm going through something and some of the comments here sound like my experiences. I turned 40 in Nov and have been in great health other than long, painful cycles. Now, I can't wait to go to sleep at night and then I'm awake by 3 AM. I have night sweats and I ache! My wonderful GYN has prescribed an iron supplement with folate. Thyroid is acting up and I have two fibroids, both the size of grapefruit. My cycle is very irregular but when it does come it is heavy and painful. Speaking of brain fog...OMG!! I will be getting a shot for three months to shrink the fibroids. The shots will put me in a menopausal state. I have to get mentally ready and I'm not there yet!

Jonnai, so sorry that you are suffering so. Unfortunately, it will get a little worse when you go on the hormone to shut your cycles down. I had to finally find an alternative practitioner to get some relief. I think that there are a lot of good physicians who do hormones, but in my area, I had to go outside the box. Hope you get relief soon.

Hmmm. Glad I'm not going nuts.
Have been spending a lot of time wondering why I just don't feel "right". Not exactly tired and not exactly sick - just not "right". Tried talking to a friend who has also been through peri and menopause. She was able to identify which made me feel as if this was something others went through too.
Biggest problems for me are (mild) headaches that last 3 days - just enough to annoy you, the feeling of palpitations which no doctor can ever detect - it's just what I feel, (pulse and blood pressure are normal), insomnia, not feeling hungry at meal times - but always feeling hungry at really odd times. The brain fog is a struggle to deal with especially with kids and work. I also get easily irritated over things that normally would not phase me at all. I'm normally a really even-keel, highly patient person. This just isn't ME!

Thanks to talking with my friend - I am now setting up to get my hormone levels tested too - but I'm not going to do it through my PCP. (Every time I go, I just seem to get given another free sample or a prescription). Instead I'm going to try a practitioner with a more holistic approach who may be able to come up with some alternatives.

Perimenopause and I are good friends. OK, not good friends, but you know what I mean. The unpredictable periods are the worst. Night sweats, but only on my chest. Wii Fit seems to help with the bloating... no kidding. And I swear I saw my mom in the mirror last night! Not good when you have a 7 year old.

Just make sure your dr. doesn't blow you off. I switched drs because of it. I'll be 49 next month but the old doc kept saying I was too young for menopause, never mentioning perimenopause. And never took into consideration I had my last baby at 41 3/4s.

There is a good book by Robin McGraw and another one by Dr. Christiane Winthrop called The Wisdom of Menopause.
