Any thoughts about suitable skirt lengths once you are over 40. I've never gone for the kind of skirt that could double up as a belt, but I'm wondering if I should stick to longer lengths now or is something a couple of inches above the knee ok? I've asked other people and the response has been mixed, so how short is too short?

Well, I think if you consider yourself hip and have on a cute outfit a little above the knee is ok, as long as when you bend over you aren't **ehm** exposing anything. :P

Really depends on the occasion. If it's for work, I would probably stick to longer lengths.

LOL Yes, not exposing anything is a good maxim. Mind you, I think some younger women might want to bear that in mind too.

I'm not sure if I consider myself hip, but I know I'm not ready for a twinset and tweed skirt just yet. And I have all these lovely skirts, which are an inch or two above the knee and which I wore quite happily in my late 30s, and it seems a shame to consign them to the discard box just because of an extra digit or two on my age.

I have the opposite problem - I'm tall so lengths tend to be a little higher than they were meant to be LOL I have several supposedly full length dresses which actually reach mid calf on me. And don't get me started on knee length boots . . . I know some shops do have lines which cater for different heights, but I wish more did.

I wear the length of most dresses and skirts about 2" above my knees. I'm short though, not even 5' so, I can usually wear something that would hit a petite just right and not have to hem it!

I love 'em long, but I think you should wear whatever length you feel comfortable in. If you're skinny go for the short skirt, just be sure it's not tight and short :)

LOL No definitely not tight and short. I really don't want to be 'that' mother.

You can go tight, or you can go short - just not both at the same time ;) LOL

My favorite thing to wear is my Skorts... and my dh likes to tell me that they are too short. I have usually worn skirts just below my knee, but have been watching What Not To Wear, and they have encouraged me to go a little shorter. I still keep them around my knee, but again, except the skorts. I think for me, losing weight has helped with feeling like I can.

My big thing if we want to talk about 'age appropriate clothes' is people who wear words on their butt!! Sorry, but personally, I think that is for the teens. (Yah, I harassed my sister, who is in her mid thirties about that one!) Again, JMO!

I've always heard above the knee, is fine if you aren't going mini. then it's just awkward. but I would think it depends on how you look in it...if you can pull it off!..hmmmm...

We have a neighbour of around 50 who does both short and tight, it's not a good look.

Oh yah, you see them with Sweet or Cute or other fun stuff. I think my Sister's said Attitude or something like that. I am sure it was something related to Tinkerbell ;) Again, age appropriate???

I think there is a lot of stuff you can get away with in your twenties that some people just try and keep going. I think that in your 40's there is a way to look 'cool' and 'instyle' without looking immature. Just have to learn where to shop and things to look for. I think for me though, the most frustrating part is that people who make clothes think only parts of your body are big or small.... Ok, that is going into a whole nother topic... I think I will start another discussion ;) to keep this on track :)

Frankly, I think mini, mini's (you know, the crotch shot mini's), are definitely going out of style again. Mini's are still in, but they're the kind that we all can wear regardless of our age's, or how fat our knees are. The new mini is just above the knee; short enough to be sexy, but long enough that the world doesn't see your business when you bend over for the morning paper. Skin tight mini's are just for the "I'm in a band" or "I'm with the groupie's" look. Those are a different breed that are way under our league at this point in our lives, so we can safely consider them faux pas!

The new mini is just above the knee with style and flare. I like the one's they have at The Limited that are slightly A-lined and slightly gathered. The pencil look is best left to those in the office; it's too "strict" for everyday wear.

And if you do wear them, get a decent platform wedge to go with. Your legs will look longer and thinner. But remember to take them off when your husband/boyfriend starts chasing after you in the house, LOL!

OMG - I just realized that I sound like a freaking "Elle" article!
