Are you talking the "trying to read things close-up" glasses? I've been wearing those reading glasses for a few years, and I'll tell you I went from not needing them to needing them in less than 3 months! It hit me like a rock!

I had LASIK eye correction surgery in 2000 so I no longer needed glasses for regular life; it was a bummer to have to get the magnifiers, but oh well, such is life!

yeah sorry for reading. i know your eyes start to go in your 40s or so i hear- think it might be all the computer time too. oh well...

Karen, I honestly don't think computer time can accelerate aging, and that's all it is with our need for magnifying glasses for reading. Our eye muscles are no longer as flexible and can't do the gymnastics as previously able.

I rarely put a pair on for the computer, sometimes the newspaper, often with books, always with beading/sewing. I like how you said, it, Sherri -- it's more relaxed when you put them on. Perfect description!

It seems like when I finally realized I needed them...I also kept forgetting they were on top of my head and would look for them. So is it really the EYES that go first??????

I think I was about 45 when I started noticing I wasn't seeing things as well. Now at 48, I definately need to wear them for sewing, reading etc.

how about 5 minutes after my 40th bday! arrggghhh.
It started with only needing them in the morning -
then it was, well the medicine label is on the curve.... so thats why I need glasses
then I went back to work (outside the house) and thought okay, these spread sheets are sooooo small.

I now where 1.25 to 1.75 depending on what I'm working on. But I will be honest, once I started wearing them, it got to the point that I really needed them, all the time! BUT, with them, less headache and more accurate reading.

I am holding out so far. Was getting headaches so I was wondering if that was it. i did go to the store the other day and looked at those cheapo $5 glasses and put a few on but they seemed to strong so i guess I am not quite there yet. : )

This year - (41) I noticed that I was getting headaches everytime I would work on cross stitch. Granted, the piece I'm working on is 22-count cloth but I figured that my regular glasses (which came totally out of the blue last year when I went to get my pressure checked to get my mother off of my back) would do the trick since they're bi-focals. My eye doctor checked and said that my prescription hasn't changed - so "use bigger cloth." I tried a pair of "readers" from the drug store and it worked for the seeing part but gave me headaches so I got myself one of those headsets with the magnifying glass for when I stitch. I wear my glasses and the headset and am fine as long as I don't forget and try to look up at the TV. Getting older is so NOT for sissies!

I'm 42 and about a year ago I started noticeing that I couldn't focus immediately on print that was too close...had to hold it out further and then I could read it. Haven't tried glasses of any kind yet...don't want to. One of these days I'll probably cave and get some reading glasses....but, I'm gonna fight the urge for now!

Um... about when I hit 40! I had my eyes checked when I was about 35, and was told I had absolutely perfect vision. When I was about 40, I was trying to read some lyrics on a cd cover and couldn't see a darned thing. I asked my daughter for help, who said that they were clearly visible and something must be wrong with my eyes. It sort of dawned on me that it had been increasingly harder to read books, etc. Got my eyes checked, and sure enough, needed reading glasses. It was kind of wild-- once the eye doc figured out what my prescription was, he asked me to look through the lenses and try to read the same book I was reading in the waiting room. I just about fell over-- it was EASY to read now. Never realized before just how hard it had gotten to read! So, my advice is, don't hold out on those glasses-- once you get them, you'll rediscover reading all over again!

Oh, forgot to add one more thought: I have to say, I'm loving the reading glasses. I went out and bought all sorts of cheap nonprescriptive glasses at the drugstores, on sales, etc. I get the fun funky ones. (Discovered the hard way that it cost $$$$ to get my prescription filled, and that the drugstore ones worked just fine anyway.) I keep them on my nighttable, in my purse, in the kitchen, in my car. So I always have a pair nearby when I need them. Really, they make reading so much easier!

I've been wearing glasses since the 5th grade, although I have noticed that my near-sightedness isn't exactly what it was. I've been wearing contacts for about 20 years, and now I have to try the bi-focal contacts.
