How good of a sleuth are you? How does this help your adopted child?

Rather disturbing news story today on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp). http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/03/19/f-ethiopia-adoption.html About adoptive parents who discover what they have been told about their child, from Ethiopia, is not the case. In some cases, they've been told the birth parents no longer alive but in fact, the parents are alive. In some cases, they learn this from the child.

Does anyone have the address for 20/20 to order " Adopted"? I saw the trailer last year and watched more of it recently on Amanda Baden's site,

Wow!! Ya, the exchange rate is not so hot these days is it? We were just up in Osoyoos, BC about two weeks ago to visit some friends who live on the lake on the Washington side, and the exchange rate was a real topic of conversation. I also have a lot of family in Saskatchewan, and it really affects their ability to travel to the states for vacations. :( I hope you feel it was worth it once you see it. I thought it had pretty strong impact.

Hey Doris, I was able to order the video from 20/20. Not cheap...at least not to mail here to Canada. $30 US (so what's that....$500 Canadian these days? :--)) and with shipping it came to just over $58!

Thanks Doris. I'll google the program and see. "Quiet suffering." Yes. And until we talk with others, or come across some helpful information, we don't understand what's happening and think we're alone. Doris have you seen the documentary film, "Adopted"? Here's the Youtube site: http://www.youtube.com/user/adoptedthemovie

I bet you can get a copy of it from 20/20. I know when I saw their first feature on Romanian orphanages in 1989, I was able to purchase a copy of it for about $20. This particular one that I just saw in November was gripping, and heart wrenching, and encouraging - a compelling piece, and definitely spoke of the quiet suffering that so many adoptive families often go through before they are able to find the support they need.

I wish I'd seen that program on 20/20. Wonder if I can get ahold of it? I'm beginning a blog that will chronicle our adoption story (full of political intrigue as well as the kinds of issues you mention below). I am a filmmaker so it will be a very visual story, and will include our daughter's perspective as well as my husband's and my own. I don't counsel but will want to be able to refer people to available resources so I'm very happy to know of the work you do.

I agree. The birth abandonment is there, no matter what. It seems to show up in so many children in a sense that they don't deserve good things in their lives... a deep shame that seems to be there, regardless of how well they attach to the adoptive family. With some of the children from orphanages, I've seen a real sense, too, that they feel they don't deserve to have things better than their birth family or the friends that they left behind in the orphanage. Did you happen to see the episode of 20/20 that was shown on November 28th called "Adoption Disruption"? It was about families who adopted children and then had very disturbing situations develop once they got home with one or more of the children. They featured a lady who runs a kind of "treatment farm" where she is being successful with many children in helping them find healing and avoiding legal "disruption" of the adoption. It made me so sad and reminded me why I feel so strongly about working with these parents and providing them with support. I coached one mom who'd adopted 4 children in mid-childhood from Russia and they were all teens at the time we worked together, and wow did she ever have to hold on with a tenacious love!!
