twitter moms: the influential moms network

Hello all,
My husband and I (okay, more me than him!) are looking to relocate from Texas to the east coast. My personal preference would be New York city but my husband really doesn't like big cities or the cold. (and I hate small towns and the heat!) One place that we both agree that we could be happy is Maryland. I have 2 children ages 6.5 and 3 and I really would like them to be around educated, middle class black families. Here in Austin there are few and they are one of a few in their classes. I like the idea of being close to Washington DC for the culture, but not in the city. I have read that Prince George County is a great place for black families. Would love some input. Thanks.

Im sure you might have been on there already but the city data forums are an absolutely great resource for looking to see what areas great for black families , especially suburban areas.

I actually lived in PG County for a number of years. I still live in Maryland, but have since moved to a different part (largely for economical reasons). There are good and bad things about PG county that you, as a family, need to weigh and determine the importance of. We didn't like the area we lived in b/c it was a little to urban for us (no room for yard that we could afford), but some people don't require this. We also have very high standards for education (I am a teacher) and were not impressed with the public schooling options in the areas we could afford, and private school was also out of our budget. On a positive note, there are numerous opportunities to experience the culture and history of D.C. And, there are a lot of positive African American families in the area to form relationships with. Hope this helps, and feel free to contact me if you have additional questions about relocating. Would love to help!

Hey all,
Thanks for the info on Prince George County. For the moment we are staying put as my husband has a good job and his field of engineering is not really hiring right now. so we must be grateful for what we've got. In time,
hopefully, we'll be able to relocate.

PG is like anywhere else; there are good areas and bad areas. But there are probably more good areas than most places and more upper middle class and wealthy Black residents. It's also a short drive or Metro ride to D.C. and Virginia. There's a lot of history in the area and a lot of diversity. When it comes to schools, PG neighbor Montgomery County is better (among the best in the nation), so you might want to consider MoCo in addition to PG. But that part of Maryland, period, is great. We have no complaints!

Hello, Darlene

Nice to meet you. Have you moved to Maryland yet? I am orginally from Baltimore, MD but I left home when I was 17 to join the army and have never wanted to go back. I was born and raised in MD but I can't take the traffic, cold weather, and the cost of living there, let alone the crime rate. From what I have heard the county is much better though.
