My family has always been atheist or free-thinking. My in-laws are super-Methodist. They know I am atheist and have always had a problem accepting it ( my mom-in-law threatened to kill herself if my husband and I got married). She's still living. It's been 13 years of "pretending to like each other" and get along but I'm finding it more difficult to play nice. To make matters worse, I think my husband is starting to want to be more of a Christian all of a sudden which is not really a big surprise to me b/c he's never been able to articulate what he believes very well. He preferes to just stay out of it. I want to know if anyone else has had to handle in-laws not being respectful of their "non-beliefs". I wanted to attend a Humanist celebration this year but of course, my mother-in-law wants to hold her "Christmas" on the same day (12/20) so everyone can be together. I'm not sure what to do. I have 2 children (ages 8 and 10) and I don't want to rock the boat for their sake but at the same time, I don't want to be a hypocrite and pretend to be a part of their Christian celebration. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome Hippy Chikky and Nicole!

I know there hasn't been much action in this group, I've been busy with life, but yes, I am an atheist mom with a positive outlook on life.

I'm glad to see new members, and people, feel free to start discussions about any subject that you like.
As we are heading into the holiday season, if you're just coming out as an atheist to your family, this may be a trying time for you.
If you're not sure how to handle those questions from relatives about you being an atheist, post up a discussion and get some feedback from those of us who have been at that huge family dinner table at Thanksgiving or Christmas before, and ask us how we handled Uncle Bob telling us that we're going to hell as he shoves a huge turkey leg in his mouth and gravy dribbles down his chin. ..LoL

Or maybe it's Aunt Martha telling you that you're abusing your kids because you don't take them to church every Sunday, and that raising them without god is raising them as heathens and sinners, that your kids will burn in hell and it's all your fault.

We've been there, done that, ripped off a chunk of bread while we contemplated what to say to them to make them stop their verbal assault without completely disrupting what should be a joyous family occasion.

I'd love to hear your coming out stories as well, how did your families take the news? Friends? Co-workers?
When you came out, did you discover that you weren't alone in your daily life interactions?

Tell us about it, and again, welcome! *smile*

I am a newbie too. I am having trouble coming out of my "athiest closet". I have been looking for other athiest moms that have a POSITIVE outlook on life.

Thank you Celina.
It's rough, I admit it. tight now, I'm not quite as strong physically or emotionally as I like to be, as I usually am.
I'm trying to get myself mentally prepared for the surgery, and it's not very easy because I'm one of those give me the facts people.
Well, now that I have all of the facts and details on what all will happen during the surgery, I'm a bit freaked out...LoL

It will be ok, I'll get ready for it, just need some time.

Thanks again. :)

Kat - best of luck with your upcoming procedure. I can't even imagine how hard that will be. Take care of yourself!

Have you all checked out Charlie's Playhouse?

It's games and toys inspired by Darwin.
When I first found them, they only had the giant floor time line, they now have other products, and they say they are always working on more.
So it's definitely a site to bookmark for the future if you have young (or older) kids and want to introduce them to evolution.

I've personally seen the giant floor time line, and it is fabulous!
There is so much to look at on it, kids interested in science, dinosaurs, fossils, and more, will love it.
It's the size of a coffee table book when folded, and expands to 18ft long, and comes with an activity guide, glossary, and FAQs. It says it's good for kids ages 4-10, and I would agree with that, but I can even see older kids who are interested in science and evolution, being fascinated by all of the details and information provided.

Hey all, sorry that I have not been around here and posting too much for awhile.
I am going through quite a bit of medical stuff.
I am getting ready to have a 3rd spine fusion surgery on June 29th, so I'm very busy getting my house in order, and trying to mentally prepare for the surgery and long recovery ahead of me.
I have been dealing with a great deal of back pain, medical testing and such.
The surgery is at the end of June as I've said, and I really do not know when I will be able to get back to blogging and posting here after the surgery. I will be in a halo brace for anywhere from 3-6 months, probably in a lot of pain, so I really cannot say when I will be back to posting.

I also apologize for not being here much the last few months.
It's just been 1 thing after another with my health and my children, personal life, but please do feel free to keep posting here, post articles you find, whatever you may find relating to atheism/secularism/religion, or whatever that relates to any of those topics in my absence.
When I can get back up and around, it'll give me stuff to read.
A friend sent me this jpeg the other day, thought it was good.
