Hi Noelle! I actually used to read your blog, left comments from time to time too, still have it bookmarked as well. I miss your posts but do understand not having time to devote to it, it happens.

It's great to see you here!
I look forward to seeing more posts, discussions, and additions to conversations when you have the time to stop in.

I love seeing this group grow too!
The first few days to a week, it was pretty lonely 'round here, just a couple of us, and now we've got a nice little number going on and always welcoming to new members.

Hey, all. I'm new to Twitter and this is the first group I've joined. I used to write for the Humanist Network News as Agnostic Mom and also was very active with my blog of the same name. AgnosticMom.com is still there and I do update it once in a long while but I don't have the time to devote to it that I used to.

Anyway, I was very surprised and happy to see a group for us atheists (despite my writing name, I do consider myself an atheist). Thanks, Kat, for setting this up.

Oh, and sorry for my lengthy absence.
I've been dealing with the flu and some other medical issues for quite awhile now.
Not better fully yet, but I will make a more conscious effort to come here more often. :)

I call it Christmas, it's just a word to describe the holiday, so I take no offense to it, and I also have no problem saying Merry Christmas to other people.
If i do say Merry Christmas and some takes offense, I know they are like minded and I usually engage them in a conversation about it just being the polite thing to say to people.
It's a festive, happy season, why go around intentionally upsetting people ya know?
So I'm polite, I say Merry Christmas, it doesn't bother me at all.
My kids know the true story of how Christmas came to be, the pagan winter solstice taken over by the Romans who had all these new believers in Christ, Pope Julius declared December 25th in the year 350, as the day that they would celebrate the birth of Christ, so the Romans took winter solstice from the pagans, called it Christmas, but allowed the Pagans to continue with their usual solstice traditions which included bringing a tree indoors and decorating it as a way to hope for good crops come spring, and other traditions as well.
I actually think it was very clever of Julius to allow the Pagans to keep their traditions.
It kept the peace between them and the new Christians, and the new Christians didn't start taking some of those traditions until the year 1546 in Germany.

I call it "Christmas." It just simplifies everything for me. I grew up believing it was Christmas. To me, Christmas is a word, easily understood by all. I enjoy having a reason to give my child presents!

"Christmas"? What do you call this festive season?

HI Kat! You're absolutely right. It is the oddest quandry isn't it? For example, almost all early cultures believed in earth dieties. Both the Greeks and Romans had similar Gods and Goddesses. The Bible has been changed and passed down with these changes as gospel. Now, I have to rethink how I perceive what my son needs to be exposed to.

Hi Joyce! Welcome to our group, happy to have new members here. :)
You posted some interesting views, and I really do enjoy reading how others think, feel, and what they believe in.
I am not arguing or debating, just conversing based on the following which you said.

I believe you need to be exposed to something before you say I don't believe in it.

This was really interesting to me, because I am an atheist, I do not believe in god, and so my question would be, how can one be exposed to God in order to decide whether or not we believe in it?
We can be exposed to the bible which says there is a god, we can be exposed to church which says there is a god, and we can be exposed to other people who say there is a god, but how can we be directly exposed to god, in order to decide whether or not we believe in it?
If there is no evidence of god other than the 1 book, the bible, that is the only 'proof' of god, how do we get exposed to god in order to decide whether we will or will not believe in god?

It's like saying, I can't decide whether or not I believe in pink unicorns unless I am exposed to them, but there are no pink unicorns, so does that leave me to have to say I believe in pink unicorns until I get exposed to one, and then once exposed, I then get to decide I don't believe in it?
If I am exposed to the pink unicorn, have seen it with my own eyes, perhaps touched it with my own hands, then it does exist, and I would be a fool to say I don't believe in it.
But we all know there are no pink unicorns, there is absolutely no evidence that any exist other than the fairy tales, the stories in books, so I am not a fool to say I don't believe in pink unicorns.
The same exact thing can be said of god(s).

You gave me something to think about at this late hour after suffering insomnia for many, many hours now.
I have been wide awake since 7am on Tuesday, and it is now after 3am on Thursday.
Lack of sleep makes me think too much...LOL

Hi all! I grew up in the Seventh Day Adventist church. My grandfather is a minister. I really can't say I am an atheist. I can say I do not believe in organized religion. People prostesizing,(sp?) pushing prayer in school, or their own limited beliefs makes me shut down. I tried so many different churches, to find one that fit me. I believe in Karma, fate. I believe that "God" isn't a man or a woman but some cross. My belief systems are so outside mainstream. I refuse to allow my son to say he doesn't believe in God, because he has not been exposed. I believe you need to be exposed to something before you say I don't believe in it.

just thought I'd mention that I've started a group about Buddhism, in case there are any moms here who study/follow or are interested in the Buddhist philosophy.

It is a non dogmatic Buddhist group, following discussions about living life following the eightfold path and Buddhism as a philosophy in life rather then another dogmatic religion.

If your interested in participating please pop over and join in.
