Our group is growing, little by little. Tomorrow is a big day for my family. I go for a meeting with the school to discuss his results for all the evaluations they did and to go over his IEP and placement. I am excided and worried. His teacher mentioned that one of the considerations was to have him be mainstreamed. He is at a special school for only special needs children. I think he needs to stay, at least for this year. He has a lot of issues that I think they can help with better than a regular public school.

It is hard to figure out what the best way to handle the situation is when the fact is, most schools don't listen to the parent. They say they want our input, but in the end don't listen. When I got fed up with the school system, I took my son out and homeschooled him until I felt he was ready to go back. Now, he is doing great in school. The people at the school he is at are doing a great job with him. And I know that if I had not pulled him out when I did, we would not have made the breakthroughs that took him from doing pre-k work to 6thand 7th grade work. The school is even impressed.
As for how to handle your stress, you need to arrange for a couple hours to yourself whenever possible to do nothing. My husband takes the kids out and let's me have the house to myself for a couple hours whenever I feel like I just can't handle anything or anyone.

Thanks Tammy, the EEG came back normal, still no reason known why the seizures came back the way the did but they have and we are dealing the best we can! He is on depakote twice a day and diastat for any over 5 minutes. It truly amazes me that the special school that he is in the teachers are so unaware of the difference between seizures and behaviors. I know that epilepsy is highly misunderstood but give me a break it is not that hard for someone to either look on the computer or at a book or at least take 2 minutes to look at the booklet I put together for them to explain the signs and symptoms that he may show and what it has been like since the seizures have started back up! His nurse who is a LPN just like me is driving me nuts with questions 101 everyday almost, I am ready to pull him out of that school for their stupidity as well as the fact that bubs stress level is so high over there and that may just be the reason that the seizures have come back the way they have! Anyone have any ideas on how to cope with the school/the nurse and my nerves??? Thanks again for the prayers they are appreciated!

Aloha! I commend all the mothers who have autistic children...I don't have a autistic child but I've worked with autistic children for the past 10 years when I worked as a Special Education Paraprofessional for the State Dept of Education here in Hawaii. I've learned so much just working alongside these special students.
I sincerely know what families go through...Keep up the good job MOMs!

I'd like to welcome all our new members. We are a small group, but we have big hearts. We are all praying for Heather B and her son. We could use some good news. Anyone want to share a great moment? I'll go ahead and start a discussion for it.

Hi Jenn. My son wasn't diagnosed until he was 5 too. It does seem to get worse as they get older. The different concerns get more pronounced. Taking it one day at a time is how I handle it too. I love my son, and am very proud of the progress he has been making. We are revisiting an old stim right now, chewing on his shirt, definitely worse this time around because he is older now. Welcome to the group.

Hi my name is Jenn, and my son Gavyn who is now 8 was diagnosed when he was 5. I knew there was something off, but I felt at the time I was jumping on the "new designer kid problem of the month" sorta bandwagon and put it off till I was told one month into Kindergarten that there was a problem. He has gone through testing and more testing, and he was finally diagnosed with PDD-NOS and I feel he is definately more on the stimi side. He is fine verbally, but has so many other issues....food, clothing sensitivity, he is light and action stimulated, he flaps (when he is happy or excited, and rocks (when he is tired or bored). As he is getting older and bigger he is becoming harder to deal with, even though he is really a loving child, trying to understand what makes him tick is still a day to day....

Heather, I really hope that everything is okay, I would not know what to do...my thoughts are with you...
