Giveaway for the book 101 Games & Activities for Children with Autism is going on at my site. It's a great book.

:( I now am back home but have a HUGE migraine! Anyways, our appointment went okay but we were once again told we were "waiting and seeing" for a diagnosis. I was told I could start giving Ethan Melatonin for sleeping at night, but we also upped his meds just a little bit...we will see what happens. I brought my concerns up, the dr. told me that it is just the summer that is causing him to slide back into his own little world. Ummm...not too sure about that!
She also said that she hoped that I felt I was in the right spot for getting help, I didn't comment because to be honest I don't feel that way but at the same time she is the only one who is helping us.
I am wondering how one becomes "okay" or able to accept the fact that we might not ever know what Ethan has or the fact that we just have to continue to "Wait and see"??? We strongly feel, along with :
~speech therapist
~his preschool
~our Early Interventionist
and others that our son is on the Spectrum. Yet, these other doctor's just don't see what we see...and it is something else like OCD and him being anxious. Anyways, that is my little rant for the day and an update for you all too...

Hugs,
Catherine

Ethan is on Prozac a very small does... and he was doing well on it, but now it seems he is going backwards. The getting stuck on topics is a hard one, because that is all they want to talk about...and after awhile you have run out of things to say and do about the topic they are into at the time.
I would have to say thought that the hardest thing to deal with is our 2 1/2 year old daughter who repeats everything I say 24/7, after awhile it get's tiring hearing your words, coughs, sneezes repeated all day long. Even if she is very involved with an activity she will still repeat (don't think she knows she is doing it)...she has gotten better. We are also getting her checked for having Autism too...even though she too is high functioning.
Thank you, will let you know how our appointment goes...

Hugs,
Catherine

yes, it could be the dosage. Nick is on Luvox because he would go on and on about a certain topic (perseverate) due to his OCD, so Luvox helped reduce this problem.. when we increased his meds because it seemed to be time (still a low dose) it was, apparently, too much for him and the stimming, chanting was a side effect.

it seems your son has the same issue, perseverating on topics, I know how frustrating that can be. Good luck with your appointment and let us know how it goes...

Things here were going well, until I started to notice our son Ethan slowly slipping back into his own world. He is having meltdowns again, he is back talking with a very high nasal voice and is talking loudly again, he is getting stuck on topics again for hours/days/weeks and he hasn't done this for a long time. He is also on meds but it is such a low dose that perhaps he has plateaued on this dose and needs to be regulated again. Anyways, it is concerning none the less...and is a good thing we have a follow up appointment this morning...but I am a nervous wreck!

oh ok, well that is interesting! Interesting well perhaps that is in a way a problem in that there is no school routine that went on during the school year. In that he was so used to it, not having it is causing some problems for him...just a thought.

Thanks Catherine, it seemed the cause was too much meds, so we reduced his dosage. He still chants a bit to himself, like he used to before, but what's funny about kids who do this when they are upset, my son has been very happy because it's summer--no pressures, no heavy schedule, just fun.

Perhaps there is a small part of him that knows that school will eventually begin, starting high school isn't a little thing...

It could be many things that are triggering his stimming, it is interesting though like you said that it only just started to happen and it hadn't been going on for awhile. It just might be him being anxious about going back to school, or perhaps it is something that is simple to you and me but hard for him. For instance, any new place or person or sensory overload for my son will make him stim a lot...for long periods of time or even if he is upset he will hum for hours. Every child is different when it comes to what makes them have to stim, and you are right in that they can't help it. Very hard for them to not stim...or at least this is what I have found....

Hi:

I need help. My 15 year old son is stimming, chanting to himself and I don't know what it could be. I tell more about his newest issue in the last two or three blog posts... if you could check them out and let me know if anyone knows what this could be?

Thanks so much. My blog is at www.fearlessfolks.com

Possum had his first kindy prep group this week. 6 boys and 2 speechys. Our therapist said he did very well - participated in the games and followed their instructions. He even sat on the mat! He was getting very fidgety so the therapist sat behind him and squeezed his shoulders. He settled so she stopped. When he started moving again she told him to sit still and he asked her to squeeze him again!

It is amazing how much he has improved since starting speech therapy.
