How about you? Do you wear reading glasses? I swear that is one of the hardest things for me to accept about growing older! I hate searching for a pair to read a recipe, the back of a book at the bookstore, a text message on my phone. I have a bazillion pairs scattered around my house.

I usually wear contacts and just got prescribed one for distance, one for reading. (one in each eye) I'm still trying to figure out if that's going to work for me or not. At night I usually wear progressive lens glasses.

I do wear wild, bright reading glasses though. I figure if I'm going to have to wear them, they might as well be fun.

I have prescription reading glasses so only one pair! I'm not wearing glasses for distance yet, but my eye doctor told me last time he thinks I need bifocals next time. Drat. Honestly, I can't complain, though. My twin brother has heriditary macular degeneration and in a few years time he may not be able to drive anymore. That keeps me from complaining.

I think I need another fancy schmancy eyeglass chain for work, though, so I don't have to keep carrying my glasses around with me to various meetings. I should do some Internet searches for cool chains...

I started wearing reading glasses about 5 years ago. Before that? PERFECT eye sight.
Since so far I still only need them for reading they are often forgotten when I go out,
especially when I think I won't need them - wrong!

I can still make out menus if I squint, but trying to read labels at the grocery is very
challenging when I forget my glasses.

I'm told MANY folks over 40 with previous perfect vision lose that elasticity that the lens
normally possess to see things like small handwriting without the slightest need to squint.

I wonder is there anyone out there in their fifties and sixties that doesn't need at the
very least reading glasses?..

Where are those Poll websites :) LOL

Diane, so jealous about the perfect vision before 5 years ago. I've been wearing glasses since 2nd grade. My eyesight is horrible.

You know, I wonder if there are people out there that don't need reading glasses in their 50 or 60's. I don't know any. And why does the reply box at the bottom of the page use such a small font on this site?? Drives me nuts... But then when it posts the reply, it's the normal bigger font...

Hey this is what my mom told my siblings when I was growing up...they all got glasses I got BRACES! (Think she said that to not make them feel so bad...but I didn't exactly like that)! After I got them off though...and had nice teeth, I was 'ahead' again :)

Hi Ladies. When I was growing up, then into my 20s, 30s, and 40s, I always felt lucky that I had good eyesight. As I approached 50, I had a feeling glasses would be in my future, so I decided to look at it as an opportunity for yet another fashion statement. I chose frames long before I needed prescription lenses and I was ready when the time came 3 years ago. I needed them for reading and for distance, so progressive lenses it was.

I returned 2 years later for a routine eye appointment. After the exam, I was told my eye sight had *improved* in those 2 years and that I needed new lenses. Go figure! My next routine check isn't until February. As much as I'd like to think my sight has returned to 20/20, I know that's not the case. I see another fashion statement in my future!

Thanks for sharing your story Arlene.
I actually haven't been to an eye doctor in years.
I figure as long as I can see fine except for when I need reading
glasses, I don't really need to go.

I probably should go get them checked soon anyway as I know
there are eye diseases that can occur and I suppose some don't
show any symptoms? I don't know.

I just got bifocals for the first time! Yuck!!! I used to wear just contacts, but lately I couldn't see to read! GRRR! Kacey, how do you like the different contacts in each eye? My eye doc mentioned bifocal contacts too, but I was afraid to try them (my insurance will only pay for one or the other -- not both glasses and contacts in the same year).

Theresa, I tried actual bifocal contacts and loved how I could see out of them, but they dried my eyes out too much. Bosch & Lom I think. (or however you spell that brand). So I switched to these one distance, one reading. I'm okay with them. Don't love them. Can't drive at night with them, it's like my eyes can't figure it out at night. I got a 3 month supply of the lenses and I guess at the end of that I'll decide whether to keep these, or go back to my regular ones and hunt for my reading glasses all the time.

Yep, got my 'spotted' readers right by my computer! One pair for the kitchen area...in my purse...in my camera case...in my bookbags...
I remember BRG (before reading glasses) thinking why the heck does Oprah have a gazillion pairs of reading glasses...thought that was a little excessive...until I hit the need and now I completely understand why she has so many pairs.
I don't attach mine to a necklace...I don't like the look of the chain dangling when the readers are on. I prefer to slip on arm in my neckline or pocket or ID neck lanyard.
Since I'm nearsighted, when I'm not wearing my contacts, I don't need my readers and take off my prescription glasses to read! Yes, I know...I need to get transitions or bifocals or crazy contacts.
I do love the fun designs that readers come in too!

I realized I needed bifocals about 4 years ago.

I only wore glasses for night driving. Well, one night I tried to read something in my car. I had my glasses on - and I was shocked. I could not read with my glasses! The print was blurry. At first I thought something was wrong with my glasses. Then I realized that my eyes had reached the bifocal stage. Reluctantly, I did get progressive lenses.

I wish I could wear the over-the-counter reading glasses. Unfortunately, I have astigmatisms in both eyes, so have to wear prescription lenses.

Acceptance is key, progressives are a way of life, but I am grateful for sight, and like you said there are so many pretty styles now!
