twitter moms: the influential moms network

I was just thinking about all the little things that define us as a generation, from skate keys to JFK to walking on the moon. I thought maybe we could get nostalgic together on something specific.

So share with us if you will --
What was one of your favorite TV shows or movies when you were young?

In college I lived on a shoestring. On a good month my mom would send me $5 for spending money, as everything my Freshman-Junior years was taken care of, from housing to meals. The local movie theatre ran the same feature film for a month at a time, so I saw Mary Poppins, Swiss Family Robinson and Funny Girl multiple times. I also loved Sound of Music, because I'm a singer and back then I alternately wanted to be Julie Andrews or Barbra Streisand.

Thanks for this discussion. I MUST be getting old. I'm starting to like to reminisce... *sigh*

Movies: Love Story. Sigh, I thought it was so romantic. Books though? Wow, I loved Trixie Beldon books. Read all the Little House books, and Little Women. I wrote a whole post back awhile ago on my blog about Wheelos, remember them?

Deb, I absolutely loved all the movies you mentioned. My brother got so sick of my sister and me singing all the songs to Sound of Music from our soundtrack album that he still loathes them all to this day. :) Mary Poppins and Swiss Family Robinson were also favorites of mine too - oh, and Funny Girl. Wow. I think the first movie that really enchanted me was Pollyanna; I wanted Hayley Mills to be my best friend.

Kacey - Oh, how funny to bring up Love Story - the movie that made us all cry. Who was the actress that played the lead...I can't recall right now. I never read any Trixie Beldon books, though probably every Nancy Drew book along with Little House and Little Women. Oh, and the Bobbsey Twins - anyone read those? I'm going to have to find out what Wheelos are - that totally escaped me!

On my 18th birthday, I awakened to the soundtrack of "The Sound of Music." My folks had bought me the album.

As for my subsequent movie theatre visits, I would sometimes sit in the front row and just feel like I was inside the movie too -- especially Funny Girl. "No-bod-y, no, no-bod-y, is gon-na rain on my pa-rade!"

Deb I'm with you. I'm a singer and loved Julie Andrew's voice. I loved all the musicals too! My folks took us to see Fiddler on the Roof in Philly when I was a kid. That really made me wish I was on stage. I was in a few church plays but that was about it. I used to listen to music for hours and hours and sing all the time...45's and then albums. I loved Karen Carpenter too and I think that perhaps if I had enough guts and American Idol was around back then, I would have tried out.

I still have a dream to sing. Maybe I'll be a female Willie Nelson. :)
I do play the guitar and try to practice 'performing' when I can. Work and other stuff get in the way...but maybe when my youngest is in college...the gutsy Diane will come out again.

And long may you wave, Diane! Good for you. So when will your youngest get to college? Hmmm? If it's longer than one year, I'm gonna bug you until you hollar "Uncle!" and stop finding reasons why NOT. The gutsy Diane deserves to come out of hiding NOW. Life's too short. Hey, go for it, girl!

She is starting next year ...not too long to wait. I really won't have an excuse then either as I live in the Music capital of Texas (Austin area) :)

Good. No excuse situations are highly motivating. I'm holding you to this one, Diane!

Oh yes, one of the great things about being older and having grown kids is that we have time again to pursue those dreams that have been backburnered for so long. I think this could be one of the most creative times in our lives! So yes....go for it! :)

Wow---haven't thought about the movies everyone mentioned in soooo long! Great choices, Deb, Kacey, and Anne Marie.

Deb, if you need some reinforcement holding Diane to her performance debut just call on me. Hear that, Diane?! The reinforcements are on alert =)

Anne Marie, I couldn't agree with you more that this could be the most creative time of lives!

Diane, you know of course that Vicki, Anne Marie and I are not ganging up on you, right? We're supporting you!

(Right, ladies? Shhh. Don't tell her we're actually an easy audience. We have to hang tough and together on this.)

[whistling nonchalantly]

Er, so...Diane. You got that? We're, uh, holding you to this next year thing. Okay?

Yes indeedy, Deb! We are not ganging up on Diane - we Boomer women are just going to be excellent encouraging cheerleaders and provide all the support she wants from us, right? :) After all, being wise and nurturing is a benefit of our stage of life. Besides, I love seeing dreams come true.

One of my best friends wanted to sing for years. First it was church choir, then it was kareoke, now she sings Blues with a pinao-playing partner in local venues. They were just invited to kick off our local Blues Festival next year - each year a local band is chosen to be the opening act. She's thrilled. And tonight I'll be going to watch her perform at a local pub. I still get a thrill watching her do what she always dreamed of doing - and so yes, I know it can happen for Diane and all who have time now to follow those dormant dreams.
