I feel like my supply isn't keeping up with demand. Has anyone had success with increasing milk supply?

He's five weeks old and weighing in at 8 lbs, 9 oz. His birthweight was 6lbs, 13 oz so he's actually doing ok.

Your baby boy sounds like he is doing fine! Way to go mommy! I wouldn't stress too much, he is growing nicely. Pat yourself on the back. You're doing a great job!

Thanks, that's what my midwife said as well.

What is it? The best thing I know to increase supply is to increase demand. Your supply should increase slowly if you feed more frequently and have slightly longer feedings. It triggers your body to produce more. Also, rest, rest, rest. You have to get some sleep! I know, right! LOL.

fenugreek and blessed thistle are galactagogues, herbs that appear to increase milk supply. used at high levels (minimum of capsules/day or 3500 mg/day) an increase in milk production can be seen in as soon as 72 hours. MOre information is available here: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/herbal_galactagogue.html

I used Fenugreek for a while, I had a breast reduction and had trouble building my milk supply. I found it worked okay, but what really worked was taking Motherlove's Mother's Milk Special Blend and Shatavari capsules. I went from pumping 20 mL a breast to 100 mL in about a month.

I've tried Fenugreek a few times, and it seemed to work (though I'm not sure if it was partly psychological, because taking the herb helped me to stop stressing a little--which didn't help my supply at all--because I felt like I was doing something proactive in addition to increasing the number of times I was bf my son). My supply seemed to drop when I went back to work full-time and then again when I got pretty sick for a week. So: yes, I say go ahead and try it. It will make your urine and sweat--and sort of your general self--smell like maple syrup, but I suppose there are worse smells, right? My husband always gets a craving for pancakes when I'm on the 'greek. :) Anyway, I've been bf for about 7 1/2 months now, and it's going great. The key for me has been to STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT. The anxiety wasn't doing me any favors. Good luck!

I use it - Ive had some success...mostly cause I supplemented some due to thrush issues and my daughter eating like miss piggie and me not making enough to satisfy her!

I started using it for the first time just a few weeks ago. Because of medical reasons I only have one working breast, which, try as it might, just wasn't producing enough and at 9 months, my son was still feeding every 2 hours because of lack of supply- so I asked my lactation consultant, who is also my pediatrician's nurse, and she swears by it! For the first time, I actually feel "full" in my breast right before he eats, and I have noticed he's spacing his feedings out a little more every day.
