Are vitamins necessary for children or just glorified candies in the shapes of their favourite cartoon characters? When my kids were babies, I gave them Vitamin D drops, but since then, have just relied on food with no supplements.

My kids take vitamins (Animal Parade gummies). And they take Children's DHA (cod liver oil gummies) when I can get them to take them! :P The vitamins are my husband's thing. He thinks kids need them because they don't always eat as well as they should. I think chemically made vitamins are rarely absorbed- so why take them????? I try to get my kids to eat vitamin rich foods as much as I can. Organics are the best, IMHO.
I also agree that vitamin supplements aren't absorbed into the body to their full benefit. Over the period of a week you should simply try to make sure your kids get a wide variety of food. It isn't necessary to nag them in a single meal or day to eat all the food groups, but rather over a whole week. My kids do take vitamins but only because my doctor prescribed them because I live where flouride is not in the drinking water and kids need flouride for healthy teeth.
