twitter moms: the influential moms network

Our next newsletter will have an article on choosing meaningful gifts. I need some feedback from you all about:
"What toy from your childhood stands out as a favorite"?
What about that toy made it just right for you?
What do you recall about when it was given to you and who gave it to you?
Does the toy tell you anything about how the giver felt or thought about you?

My favorite toy was a large pink teddy bear. It was given to me by my aunt. It had soft velvety fur and listened to all of my problems and soaked up all of my childhood tears. I still have that bear and looking at it through adult eyes it has quite a grumpy face and is poorly made. As a child I did not see any of those things - I just loved him (yes, he was a him despite being pink!)
Looking forward to your responses

My favorite toy as a child was all things Barbie. My mom used to build me little furniture for them. I was entertained for hours!!!

Hi Janel,
Do you remember why it was your favorite? Who gave it to you? Do you think it was your favorite because your mom participated by building you the furniture?

"What toy from your childhood stands out as a favorite"? I have to say paperdolls as well. I've been hunting e-bay for some ballerina ones that my cousin had just in hopes of finding them!

What about that toy made it just right for you? I'm not quite sure. We loved them whether they were store bought and we had to punch or cut them out or even if we cut them out from pattern magazines and catalogs.

What do you recall about when it was given to you and who gave it to you? We usually bought them with our allowance! lol There was nothing better though than being given permission to cut up an old catalog or pattern book!

Does the toy tell you anything about how the giver felt or thought about you? Well, I think my mom knew how much I loved paper dolls so she'd give up her catalogs and pattern books for me.

What's funny is my son who is 5 was so into Veggie Tales and now it's SpongeBob (for some strange reason) and do you know he'd rather play with what he calls "cut outs" than his toys? Cut outs are either the VT or SB characters I've drawn or printed from online for him. I laminate them so they'll last longer. I bet I've cut out 20 or so SpongeBob characters from the coloring pages I found online. They are his kind of paper dolls. If one tears or is bent, he comes running for me to tape it! lol!

My favorite childhood toy was a Cabbage Patch Kid doll that my Aunt made of me. I was so excited about the doll and the fact that she could wear my infant sister (at the time) clothes. It was a personal gift and that is what made it memorable for me.
