♥Cooking with the Kiddies!♥

I believe that by teaching our kids to cook & bake early it will cut back on them relying on fast food later on. They can learn healthy choices & also have a say in what they eat. We will share recipes made by our kids & family cooking traditions!

Great group. I could agree more. I'm blogging about this very subject and find that when my kids cook with me, they're much more likely to try all sorts of interesting foods. Some of my favorite things to cook with my kids are burritos, home made pizzas, pasta sauces, stuff that's easy for them to make and put healthy things in like beans, veggies, and cheese.

Cheers to you! I totally agree that teaching kids to cook early helps them...I started with my daughters standing on a chair...now they are in college and figured out that if they cook for roommates/friends...they don't have to pay for the food and usually someone else volunteers to clean up. I swap out recipes by season on my website - http://www.chef-k.com/kids-of-all-ages/seasonal-recipes if interested.

My 10 year old and 9 year old love Tilapia...we use it often in our recipes, even my 4 year old asks for til-hoppia:}

Want to encourage kids to eat fish? Here are some great tips:

•Serve them fish that isn't fishy tasting. Tilapia is inexpensive, easy to cook and has a mild taste that kids enjoy. (Frozen bags of Regal Springs Tilapia at Costco and Krogers are inexpensive and taste as good as fresh fish).
•Keep the "fish" word to a minimum. Some kids may not try fish because they assume they won't like it. Once they try it, they often learn to love it.
•Involve kids in the preparation and cooking process, which will help get them excited about the meal.
•Make the dish they love, just substitute fish. For example, instead of meat tacos, try fish tacos (using a very mild fish such as tilapia or white fish).
•Use creative dips and sauces. Try ketchup, barbecue sauce and even honey.
•Let them play with their food. Encourage them to help garnish, make smiley faces on the fish with herbs and olives and build towers with fish sticks. Also, put a marinade into a squeeze bottle and let kids decorate the fish.
•Experiment with fun shapes and sizes. Use cookie cutters to create star, heart and diamond shapes. Take your kids to the fish counter and ask them to select the one they'd like to try.
•Lead by example, when your children see you enjoying fish, they will want to try it too.

Cooking with kids is a great way to instill healthy eating habits early. Here's a link to some great tips on how to get kids of all ages involved in the kitchen.

Great group ~ I have a 3 year old and try to cook with her when I can. I find we dc a lot of our "cooking" in the afternoon ~ playdoh, cookies stuff like that ~ and then on the weekends it's easier to cook with her.

Oh - my yes - clean up is mandatory...when my children were really young, I even moved the dishes to under-the-counter, so they could empty the dishwasher, set the table...and of course they stood on a stool to reach the sink to rinse dishes (NO Knifes for young children)...Now in Chef-K classes, clean up is always incorporated into each class - and it's considered a fun part of the class. It's all about presentation of the task at hand!
