Welcome to Dance Moms!

My name is Nichelle and I am the founder of this group. I am a professional dancer, dance instructor, dance blogger, and mom to a young son.

Dance Moms: As a teacher, I know that parents are vital to the experience of student dancers and often vital to the dance school itself. You are chauffeur, hairdresser, seamstress, stage crew, and more in the organism that is a dance studio. Your child's participation in dance may have infiltrated your own life and you probably revel in the ways dance has enhanced your child's life. Parents learn and grow along with their children in their pursuit of dance, and it is helpful to have a support system of other parents and friends that can advise, answer a question, or lend an ear when you need to let off a little steam. I hope that you find that here.

Dancing Moms: To those of you who are dancers yourselves. Your passion for dance can be new or old. You may be a student, former dancer, or enthusiast. No matter what has brought you to dance, it is fun to find others who have a similar love for moving and who want to share their experiences, triumphs, and difficulties in dance. I hope you can find that here, also.

The Group: There are all kinds of moms here, including former pros, instructors, and long-time dance moms. I know they want to share their passion and expertise with you so feel free to post questions, offer thoughts, and share helpful resources and links with the group. I've added a feed from my blog Dance Advantage below and welcome your thoughts on any of the topics posted there.

Comment by Tracey Morin on April 20, 2009 at 3:43pm: Hi all I am a dancer/ dance teacher /choreographer/coach and was a director of a dance studio that I completely ran on my own for many years until I had a baby 2 yrs. ago. I gave up he tudio because I was there all the time and couldnt do it with a newborn. But I still teach /coach a middle school dance team and I do a summer stock in the summer. Right now I have a 12 yr. old who went pro. in dance at the age of 8 and I travel with her around the states with her competing. I absolutely love this for her and so proud that she is following in my footsteps and living her dream at a young age. Would love to chat about dance/ performing or competing ~ anything!

I'm the program manager for the dance program at our local park district. I have a young daughter who we put in gymnastics this year and she would have none of it. Everytime we went to class she'd say "But mommmy, this is NOT dancing". She's not old enough for our dance program yet, but will be there this fall! I wasn't a dancer myself, but I feel very fortunate to have been in the position I'm in because apparently I'm ending up with a dancer for a daughter!

Comment by Katie on March 22, 2009 at 6:53pm: Hey everyone! I am the mother of a dancer. My daughter has been dancing since she was 2 and is now 7 years old. She is also involved in dance competitions so most of your weekends are filled with dancing. This year was her first year doing a solo and I was so proud of her!! I look forward to learning about everyone!

Comment by Davelyn Joy & Mommy on March 21, 2009 at 6:44am: Hi everyone! I just put my 17 month old daughter into a tiny tot program at a dance school. Her first day was on 03/20/2009 and she loved it. The class teaches ballet, jazz, yoga, sign lanuage, and gymnastics.

My boys aren't dancing (yet! hoping to get them in Irish dance soon), but I'm a dancer :) I dance in and co-direct a local tribal belly dance troupe. I've been belly dancing for almost 14 years, and I teach on and off. I used to hula, still do for fun a bit. Did folk dance and Irish dance in college.

Comment by Veronica Gotway on March 17, 2009 at 7:25pm: Hi everyone! I have two ballerinas -- 4th and 3rd grades. They each started ballet around age 4. I'm thinking about forwarding my mail to the ballet studio -- we're there three days a week this year. Next year will be 5 days a week. Yikes!
