Welcome to Dance Moms!

My name is Nichelle and I am the founder of this group. I am a professional dancer, dance instructor, dance blogger, and mom to a young son.

Dance Moms: As a teacher, I know that parents are vital to the experience of student dancers and often vital to the dance school itself. You are chauffeur, hairdresser, seamstress, stage crew, and more in the organism that is a dance studio. Your child's participation in dance may have infiltrated your own life and you probably revel in the ways dance has enhanced your child's life. Parents learn and grow along with their children in their pursuit of dance, and it is helpful to have a support system of other parents and friends that can advise, answer a question, or lend an ear when you need to let off a little steam. I hope that you find that here.

Dancing Moms: To those of you who are dancers yourselves. Your passion for dance can be new or old. You may be a student, former dancer, or enthusiast. No matter what has brought you to dance, it is fun to find others who have a similar love for moving and who want to share their experiences, triumphs, and difficulties in dance. I hope you can find that here, also.

The Group: There are all kinds of moms here, including former pros, instructors, and long-time dance moms. I know they want to share their passion and expertise with you so feel free to post questions, offer thoughts, and share helpful resources and links with the group. I've added a feed from my blog Dance Advantage below and welcome your thoughts on any of the topics posted there.

Thanks to Irma for creating the Dance Moms badge! She has designed a scrapbook/journal for keeping dance memories. Please visit her website at www.dancescrapbook.com.

Families Move “Up, Down, & All Around”

Versatility is the real strength of Up, Down, & All Around. Parents (or educators) with little experience can pop in the DVD and get every member of the family or classroom up and moving in no time, yet there are opportunities for new discoveries and learning with repeat viewings. Related posts:

Stretching Safely for Splits

When it comes to stretching and splits some dancers place intense emphasis on achieving the ideal static position, forgetting that this type of flexibility is only part of the picture. They compromise the health of their instrument - the body - as they push to extremes to get results, and get results fast. Related posts:

Listening to Dance — An Exercise in Viewing Art

I've used this exercise with students before (usually in preparation for moving to the chosen selection). What I've noticed is that when listening to music, the students easily observe and express their reaction based upon what they've heard coming through the speakers. With very little prompting, they come up with vivid ideas, even without the benefit of lyrics as clues to the song's intention. Related posts:

Nicole...get started...the weight will come off. I notice that women use weight as an excuse not to do things, but as you start moving more the weight will come off and you will be even more motivated. =)

LOVE Dancing with the Stars!!!! I look forward to it every week! Who do you think will win? I'm rooting for Lacey and Lance-because I loved her in so You Think You Can Dance. If she doesn't, then Julianne because she's just so darn cute!! And good.

Great group! I started dancing when I was three and haven't stopped. I've moved around a lot and haven't had too much in the way of formal training as of late, but I still love dancing and can't wait til next year when my oldest daughter will be old enough to join a class!

What a great group! I've been a dance mom for over 10 years, and my daughter has danced competitively for the last several years. I look forward to the discussions on this group.

I began dancing in gradeschool, worked as an assistant teacher in my early teens and was teaching, choreographing and directing performances by my late teens and early twenties. In 1999 I started my own studio - Attitudes Dance & Performing Arts in Cambridge, Ohio, but in 2004 we had to close due to a severe back injury. After a year and a half in bed, and several years of recovery and physical therapy I am back to working out - with no pain - yeaahhhh!! And am now working on taking off the weight I gained during my down time, rebuilding my strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance so that I can dance again!

My kids were raised in dance studios - my daughter danced from the age of 2 until she finished college last year at the age of 24. My son only took two years of dance - it just wasn't his thing. At 16, he's now a skateboarder, a sanctioned amateur boxer, and an expert marksman in shooting sports for 4-H, and never wants to dance again, LOL!

I have two daughters who between them have danced for 33 some years! They are 21 and 18 and both started when they were three. They both started competitive dance when they were 7 and had a great time with that. It was great for their self confidence, but boy, was it hard on my wallet!! Then they both danced on their high school dance teams, one year together. Katie, my oldest, was lucky to be on the team when it was a good team-not just talent wise, but parent wise, too. they were state champs three years running and were well respected by their peers. When Molly, my youngest came on, they were lucky enough to go to High School Nationals in florida. What an incredible experience!! Mollys junior year, the coach left, new coach, new families and it went down hill fast! It's amazing what some interfering parents can do.
Katie is now on her college dance team and loves it. Molly tried out, made it, but decided she couldn't handle all that it required her first year in college. Broke my heart-wanted to see my girls dance together one more year-but she had to do what was right for her. She takes dance classes-she is hoping to minor in dance-and is enjoyeing her classes a lot.
Didn't mean to be so long winded. It will be fun to talk with other moms who "get it":)

Hi, everyone! My daughters, ages 4, 7, and 10, all take dance. They started dance because they do a lot of musical theater and needed to become better dancers to get better parts. Now, they love dance and theater! My 7 and 10 year olds will be in Wizard of Oz in two weeks. I did not take dance as a kid, but took baton twirling lessons from age 7-18. I taught lessons before I had kids and was a NBTA (National Baton Twirling Association) judge. I loved my years as a twirler, but am very happy to be a theater/dance mom!

YAY a place for us crazy dance moms. My daughter is 9 and spends 12 hours a week at the studio. She is at Kane Dance Academy in Riverside, CA. She takes tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, lyrical, tumbling, technique, stretch and more. She loves it and I am so happy she has found her passion even if its only for the moment. Looking forward to finding other moms advice as the years go on!
