There are all sorts of ways to make your home sparkle. But scouring and polishing isn't the only method of making your space feel clean and new. You could arm yourself with a few decorator's tricks, and freshen up your home without lifting a finger.

Colour
Summer is the perfect time to add a little colour to your surroundings. In this case, we're talking white. Adding small touches of white throughout your home is a subtle way to brighten your decor and create a sense of freshness. Consider white sheets for the bedroom, a stack of white towels in the bathroom (and, if you like, the same shade for the shower curtain), a white tablecloth on the kitchen table and white candlesticks in the dining room. If the spirit moves you, you could also replace your lampshades (in the living room or bedroom, for example) with white alternatives just for spring and summer.

Sparkle
Glass accessories offer another way to make your home sparkle. Pull out your glass vases and fill them with spring flowers. Grab a glass bowl and fill it with fruit. Or, lighten up your living space and hang a mirror or two in the foyer, hallway, even in the kitchen — it's a clever way to increase (and reflect) the amount of sunlight indoors.

Glimmer
If you want your home to shine, check your cupboards and drawers for shiny objects. Silver, chrome and stainless steel are all materials that make a room look clean and polished. Options include silver candlesticks, chrome photo frames and stainless steel accessories (soap dish, canisters and waste basket) for the bathroom.

Scent
Fragrance is one of the simplest ways to freshen up your home. You could take the natural approach with flowers (such as hyacinth, freesia or roses) or look for candles and room sprays in fresh scents (for example, spring flowers, citrus scents or fragrances created to simulate the seaside or meadows).

Thanks Jan. Oh, but the photo is not of my home! Though that's a design inspiration. ;D
