Lorrie - how much exercise is Chloe getting? Hound dogs are driven by scent, so digging for them is all about going after that attractive smell; but digging for some dogs is also out of boredom or a need for more exercise. I have two recommendations:

1. Assuming that a young dog of 1.2 yrs old still has a high energy need, I would say getting her more exercise every day would be a good first step. At least a 45 min - 1 hours of vigorous exercise each day: walking, jogging, playing ball, etc.... WEAR HER OUT! LOL

2. If this is a scent-driven behavior: again, the exercise time may help with this too; but what I would do is give her a place where she can dig freely. Create a safe digging spot for her: either a child's plastic swimming pool filled with dirt, sand and bury dog toys in it for her, or build a box in the corner of your yard and train her to only dig in this one spot.

3. Training: whether or not you do step #2 above, you still need to train her that digging in the yard and flowers is a no-no. This means no unsupervised time outside at all. Period. You need to be with her at all times, on a leash if needed, to ensure she will not have opportunity to dig. Prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the saying goes. Don't give her opportunity, but should she start, correct her with a "No!", just as you would for any other misbehavior.

It will take patience, but it will be worth it!

She is young and sounds like full of energy. Do you take her for walks everyday? That helps release some of that energy. I suggest 2 a day if you aren't already doing so. Also give her things such as kongs that you can stuff with a treat or two. Those occupy time as well. Distraction and other uses for energy ...can help a lot. Also maybe only letting her in the yard on leash until she learns not to do damaging things. If she approaches one of you lemon trees (while on leash) gently tug and say a firm "No". Hope these tips help.

I got Chole a hound mix via my daughter as she is moving into an apartment. Chole is about 1 1/2 years old, house broke, crate trained and great with kids - BUT she loves to dig in my yard, up roots my flowers and went after the baby lemon trees this morning. She has had NO correction so I am starting from scratch, any tips for training a unruly Pup will be much appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Hi! I am Lorrie Alley and I never intended to have another Dog after the kids left. My daughter is having to move into an apartment so she had dropped her spoiled rotten hound mix Chole at my place and the pup is outta control! *LOL* She is about 1 1/2 yrs old and ruining my flowers beds as well as chewing up everything in site - any idea's of house to reign in this little monster would be much appreciated as my hubby is about to take desperate measures!!!

Thanks so much!
