In case you need some evidence that this isn't the "story" of moms who "didn't get their way"...
There is sufficiently strong evidence that battering is harmful to children living in violent households, a finding that should influence court decisions favoring 'the best interests of the children.' Unfortunately, parental vs. children's rights is an issue still being argued in the courts.

Some abusers use the courts to continue their control over their ex-wives and children by taking advantage of the current trend of courts favoring joint custody or granting sole custody to fathers. Women usually are the primary caretakers of children before and after divorce, and they have profound fears of losing custody, whereas the batterer has little to lose by using custody as a bargaining and power tactic.
