Hi everyone! I am just venting about the fire union. My husband was elected president a few months ago. I know he loves his job, but this president thing is another job. I must say, I am tired of of him always being on the phone, always running to meetings and going to the station to talk to the "guys". He loves this new position and I do not have the heart to tell him to it bugs me. I work full time also, so when we are out with each other with no kids, it kills me that he is on the phone always working. Soon, it will get better, they are in the middle of contract talks. I guess I just need to keep my fingers crossed that it will slow down soon.

Lee-Anne, my Dad was the union rep for a few years way back when. Thankfully that was before we all had cell phones.

I can imagine with contract talks it is overwhelming. BUT, you need to tell him that he has to turn his phone off when it's couple time. It's not fair to you and your relationship. NOTHING they have to tell him can't wait a couple of hours for a reply. But you do have to be forceful in telling him how it makes YOU feel.

My husband has been the union secretary for several years now. He also seems to be the 'go to guy' for just about anything - fire alarm problems, dispatch problems, etc. It drives me nuts! We'll be eating dinner and when the house phone rings he is always saying "let the machine get it" because that is usually for me (maybe 1x week!) but when his cell rings he is instantly answering it. He does check with me for going to state meetings, but he seems to always have 'extra' things to do on his days off!

I understand this. I found it best to casually tell him "Hey Honey. Lets do a date night, No cell phones, no kids, no computers (in my case my iphone with internet... I admit it im bad...) Ignoring a straign on your marriage can be crutial in the end. I tend to see it that if I dont speek up or do anything about it...They lose sight and dont see what it is doing and they keep on going at it and dont think anything is wrong. It is a great position to be in but you have to learn to juggle everyday life and work life.... Best of luck!!!

Been there, done that, but when it comes down to it the Union can protect your interests in you're ever faced with department merges as we are now. I'd hate to think where we'd be without them. I helped my husband when he had the position by doing his typing and helping with research. Maybe you can find a way to help as well so you're not so resentful of the time it takes.
