How do you pull a quote without an official interview?

  • Rating: No Rating
I'm not sure if is ok to pull a quote from an author or some expert without an actual phone or email interview.
Is using a quote from another substantial source (such as book they've written or other interview) as legit as speaking with the expert yourself?

If I can't reach the source, could I still say "...according to Dr. so-and-so, author of so-and-so, kids should eat their veggies. "Smoothies are a perfect solution" Dr.so-and-so says. ?????? Is this okay using a book quote, lecture, previous interview, or some other source without my personally having spoken to the expert...

Yes it is. You just have to cite where the quote came from. Such as in Dr. so-and-so's book [insert title] s/he states "kids should eat their veggies". As long as you make sure you give credit to the author and where the information came from you are fine.

sounds easy enough. Thanks, Kat.

Attribute the quote to the original source.

"Smoothies are a perfect solution," Dr. Jones said in his recently released book Smoothie Factory.

According to Dr. Jones latest book,Smoothie Factory, the smoothie is a perfect breakfast solution.

However, that said, it is always preferable to get an original quote. You'd be surprised how easy it is to get a call returned when you say you are a journalist!

Thanks, Karen! An original quote is always best, I think...but there are just times when a quick pull-out quote come in handy.
Thanks again.

I'm so glad you asked that question, Dee. I wondered the same thing myself. I have read that you can use any quote from a press release without actually having to speak with the source, if you ever come across that situation.
