I am trying to plan a veggie garden in containers because I don't have the space in the yard due to the rose garden. I have never grown vegetables before.

Any tips on getting started would be appreciated

Alot of vegetables can herbs can be grown in containers and grow bags.

Tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, cauli and broccoli all do well. Runner beans that are staked can also work well.

Make sure you feed them with a kelp based liquid food and keep the soild damp as pots dry out faster that beds.

Also, you might want to check out the website www.SquareFootGardening.com and the book All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. I think a lot of the ideas there would apply perfectly to container gardening.

My SIL just took out a whole row of roses in her back yard to make room for edibles :)

Blessings!

Barbara,

How exciting for you! I am doing container gardening and have a blogg that shows my meager efforts. ;) Containers work really well and you can grow everything. I have one container that is all salad makings and another that is salsa makings.

The information Wendy and Ann gave is great also.Containers do need more water, I am putting a missting system over mine to help maintain the dampness of the soil. Living in California our afternoon sun can get to hot so I put mine were they are shaded during the afternoon sun.

Sorry, lol I am really excite about the container gardening. Oh yea I also found a lot of good container gardening books at my local used book store. Contianer gardening was very popular in the late 60's and 70's.

If you want check out my blogg. http://www.thoughts.com/Rkringle/blog

Have fun and try things!

Square foot gardening works great! Even if your not short on space it's great for getting more out of each area. Saves a lot of work.

I used the Earth Box this year for tomatoes and peppers and it was great! it's so easy to water--you just fill up the tube until you can't fit anymore water. And you don't have to use any fertilizer. Just make sure to give it enough sunlight each day. I was surprised how many veggies I got from that one little container.

I was reading your post and just wanted to see if you’ve heard of the Grow Box? I've tried it and I've had so much success. I had Spanish Onions, Cucumbers, Butternut Squash and Beets this past summer! It's actually a bit better and a whole lot less expensive! They hold about a gallon and a half more water.
