My son Alex (10) has been in the local GT program for 3 years now, he is in 4th grade. He was tested after 1st grade and entered the program in 2nd grade. He only attends on Wednesdays. At first my husband and I were scared of what it would mean. I had envisioned incredibly complicated homework assignments, a nerdy environment, etc. But our main concern was making sure Alex was going to be happy and adapt to what it meant for him—being away from his home school, being labeled, etc. He has 3 friends in his home school classroom that go to the WINGS Program (Working with the Individual Needs of Gifted Students) and it has become nothing other than a routine in our lives. He hasn't brought any homework this year, and seldom does he ever. He did do a really cool science fair project last year which he is very proud of, but nothing else. It has been wonderful, from the beginning they work with the kids to have them understand that being gifted simply means being special, and that being special is okay. They talk about feelings, etc. It has been great for Alex and it has helped my husband and I understand him a little bit better. He tends to focus on things for long periods of time, but he does have a variety of things he is interested in. Since I can remember, Lego toys have been his vice. He is an amazing reader, and he has gone through the dinosaur, scorpion, Origami, and Transformers phase. He is a very normal child though, he loves to ride his bike, play soccer, and be with his friends. He does tune us out a lot and it makes us a little crazy sometimes. My husband and I take it a day at a time and are thankful for having such a beautiful child.
