We just got our son's Tera Nova test back and he scored in the 97% in the state of Ohio. He's advanced in every subject as a 3rd grader. Remembering he skipped the 2nd grade into 3rd grade.

We are very proud of him. It is now our challenge to make sure the school is challenging him so he doesn't get bored and not want to go to school.

Way to go Nate!

Actually our school sets up a school supply store where you can get everything on their list right there. One stop shop! It's really nice cause I don't have to shop all over the place to get exactly what the teacher wants. I think our pain is going to be in the school fees this year. Our levy didn't pass so I'm expecting the fees to go up. They eliminated all specials (art, gym, music). Typical scare tatics to get people to pass the levy instead of looking where they can cut overhead somewhere else. That's another topic for discussion.

Anyway, need to shop for clothes, if they haven't worn out last year's then they out grew it. Boys tend to wear out their clothes very fast!!!

Mine don't even go back until Sept 8 but I'm trying to add to their supply list stash every week. I'm not thrilled with their camp this year so they can't go back to school soon enough for me. ;-) I'm sure they wouldn't agree with me.

We start Aug. 25. But getting their supply list now and will start working on it. Seems like they just got out!

Hi everyone!

Who's starting back to school soon?

I know exactly what you mean. I choose not to push it in the summer. It's not worth my effort. During the school year is hard enough. He just can't be bothered. His gifted resources teacher is a big help. She says it's a pretty common type. He knows the work, he just doesn't care to put forth the effort to show YOU he knows it. He's content in his own abilities. *eye roll* Doesn't help when we're sitting at the kitchen table every evening I can tell you that. I wish they had homework on a video game he'd be all over it.

I really try to push the reading. The kids know I can't say no to a book. If they'll read it, I'll buy it ;-) I'm an avid reader and want the same for my kids. Zack would rather do something else. He asked me last night why I loved reading so much and I said "it's like having a movie in your brain" and he chewed on that for a little while and then pulled out a book he's been interested in for a little while.

Hi Amanda, Thanks he is a great kid. I think Nate and Zack are similar. I think for Nate the school work is just easy. He's great while he's at school, he stays focused and enjoys it, but once he gets home, he just wants to play or play his vidoe games. Of course we don't let him until his homework is done, but it's like torture to him too. It's not fun and it's boring. We have a hard time trying to get him interested in reading, reading for fun or learning. He just wants to do what's required and nothing more. It's frustrating for us, because he's got like a photographic memory. He reads it, it's stored like a computer chip. Then he can recite it at any time. He could be one of those kids that graduates at 14 if he were more motivated to learn on his own outside of the school room.

Hi Anne!

My gifted learner is going into 3rd so I'm somewhat new to this. I hadn't for a minute considered something like Sylvan as my GL, Zack, isn't particularly interested in school and he'd feel tortured to have to do it in the summer. Some days I wonder if they got their testing correct LOL. I know that there ARE plenty of GLs out there who crave the additional stimulation that a program like Sylvan would provide.

My youngest, going into first grade, hasn't been tested yet. My hope is that she enters the program at well, simply for the added benefits our school system throws at them. She definitely thinks differently from her brother, but learns very quickly and is more that top student, teacher's pet type than Zack.

I'm just going with the flow.
