My 8 year old was identified as gifted at age 5 when we had him tested prior to going into Kindergarten. We new his reading and math level was high and wanted to see if he could skip K and go right into 1st grade. We thought he'd be bored to death. The school didn't believe us until they tested him. He tested at a 5th grade reading level and a 3rd grade math level. Before they would let him skip a grade, we needed to have him tested by a State Certified Pyschologist. He tested him even higher. It was like pulling teeth to get him moved up. Finally by the end of 1st grade, they moved him to 2nd, then started the 3rd grade at age 7. He got straight A's in the 3rd grade and was in Enrichment class all through the 3rd grade. We call him Professor Nate! You can't ask him a question without not only getting the answer but also getting all the other facts and details.

Welcome to all our members. I'm sorry I've been MIA for so long and haven't been keeping this board moving. I got a little caught up in my own personal life drama, nothing major, just felt like I was treading water and drowning fast. Things are looking up. Hopefully I can spend some more time here and we can get some discussions going.

Laurie - does your district have a magnet school? Pull-out seems like a band-aid and I think, in general, kids hate being pulled from one thing to do another. It makes them feel singled out.

I'm planning a Back To School Event for August/September on my blog Comfort Joy Designs. I'm looking for products to promote and guest bloggers both for the homeschool and the classroom. Please email me with product suggestions or if you are interested in participating in this event.

Pull out gifted is never enough. Actually nothing my son (17) has ever had in public school been enough. (supposedly good districts) AP classes have been hit or miss depending on the teacher's ability. You need to look outside the school for opportunities for your kids to interact with older kids. Plus find out what your kid's passions are. My son's is volunteering (especially for the March of Dimes). At home you need to play tons of games...word games, games with math...like let your kid be the monopoly banker. Just keep looking for any fun stuff...Also challenge your kids by giving them books that might be above their level.

I have a son who is finsihing up fourth grade and is 9...with a end of August birthday...already the youngest in his class. This is his second year that he has taken the MAP scores what we have here in the Chicago area. A. is off the charts in reading with a 262...Same thing happend last year. He is 228 in Math which is also advanced but not as high as reading. My daughter is finishing up Montessori and is already reading at a third grade reading level and will go into first next year. This is the first year that my husband and will be moving into a more proactive role. How to talk to teachers and the gifted teacher would be helpful to hear from others. I spoke to the gifted teacher who is at another school that he will attend next year that is only 5th and 6th and she told me that it is only pull out twice a week. This will not be enough--sorry so long...

I just joined this group and I am also the mom of two gifted children.
My son and daughter both attend gifted classes. It is a challenge to raise them normally, without making them feel that they are "different" from other kids.

Ohio House restores Summer Honors Institute for gifted learners. PA cans theirs (the Governors Schools) How can any state pretend to offer an equal opportunity to high ability learners without these resources?
