The Ohio Association of Gifted Children (OAGC) is asking for Ohio parents of gifted children to testify or show support next week at a Senate Education Committee hearing. See www.OAGC.org for more information.

JJ, consider yourself lucky. I taught at a Chicago Public School where there was no recess. Most CPS schools do not have recess. The children attend from 9:00 until 2:45. I taught Kdg., so I gave my children indoor recess in the form of games.

Thank goodness the weather is getting warmer because I think both the kids and I might go crazy! Every time my 2nd grader has inside recess he ends up in trouble in the afternoon for talking or not paying attention. Because "inside recess" means watching a video in a common area with every other kid in the 2nd grade.

I have always believed in the power of recess, it gives kids the ability to blow off some steam and teachers time to breathe. But kids are losing recess minutes every year.

I read a really cool article in the New York Times about how important it is to learning. Read more about it at barefootjj.blogspot.com and let me know what you are experiencing there or here!

Hello Everyone...I am new to this group and find it refreshing that there are othe Moms out there who are focused on their child's education. My oldest son is in 3rd grade and is also being tested for the AAP(advanced accademic program) at his school. He loves loves loves to read and math comes very easily to him. My quesion is do any of you have a problem with your children being bored in class. Mine keeps saying it. He also makes careless mistakes because he is rushing his work and saying "this is so easy" while he is doing it. I keep telling him to slow down to avoid making these mistakes or to at least double check his work before he hands it in. Alot of it is just copying words wrong and not answering questions in a full sentence. Any suggestions?

My 10 year old daughter is in the gifted program at her school. It is annoying when people tell me I should not be so focused on my daughters education because we love to go to museums and we live in the book store and she loves to learn new words.

She likes to do a lot of fun carefree activities but she is happiest when she is learning something new. She loves when her 14 year old sister teaches her something new.

I try to make sure she knows it's good to want to learn but you need to have fun also.

Visit http://barefootjj.blogspot.com/ for an opportunity to win a Free copy of We're Sailing to Galapagos by Laurie Krebs!

It's a fantastic book with beautiful illustrations about the natural wonder that are the Galapagos Islands!

All this in honor of the 200th birthday of Naturalist Charles Darwin!

Happy reading and Good Luck!

My daughter was in the gifted and talented group at her high school and received a Bill Gates scholarship plus other very prominent scholarships to attend Xavier University in New Orleans. She is now a veternarian and completing her internship at Perdue University in Indiana. She is a very gifted (child) now grown adult. This was her ambition since she was 8 years old and almost twenty years later is living her goal. How amazing!!!!
