Hi really excited to find this group!! I have a 2nd grader who is extremely gifted. he is in the midst of the application process to be in accepted to the school GT center next year. All day GT classroom, level IV services. Our stress comes from his excitability and a bit of impulsiveness in his current classroom. When he knows something he wants to share it immediately! His teacher is wonderful and understanding but that can only go so far. He ends up in trouble alot for talking or getting out of his seat. Any advice on how to deal with this would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi ladies! Nice to meet you - I'm Sam, mom of 2 girls who are both gifted. I'm so fortunate to be in a district that has a 'distributed learning' program - I homeschool my oldest (grade 7) based on curriculum, with a teacher who helps me know if I'm on-track. She has a reimbursement fund through this, which helps to pay for extra programs. Last month she attended "Homeschool Riding Camp" 4 Mondays in a row - her fees covered it, and it was amazing!

In the fall, we will likely bring my youngest out of the system as well. She was accelerated but is an October baby, so she's an 8 year old in a grade 4 class - academic-wise, she's getting bored and social-wise, she's starting to feel left behind. The one plus right now is that our district has a great Challenge program and hosts one of the sites for District Challenge - so she gets lots of enhanced time. They're also doing Odyssey of the Mind right now, and she's enjoying that very much.

I'm talking too much - sorry. Just so happy to be here and have a chance to talk without judgement.

I forgot to mention - My oldest is a philosophical poet, with a strong sense of community activism and civil rights, while my youngest is all science, all the time - unless she's talking about Pokemon :P

Nice to meet you!

Hi,

I am new here. I have second grade boy/girl twins who are both in the testing process for the challenge program. I'm hoping that they both make it and not just one, or there will be some issues. They are both so smart, but in different ways. So it will be interesting! Looking forward to discussions here.

If you take a look at the list of helpful websites, several of those links have links to state websites. Your state regulations for Gifted, if you have them, would be searchable from there.

In our state, all kids are test in the First Grade. A parent or teacher can request testing prior to or after that but our Gifted Program starts in second grade so testing beforehand may not be any more beneficial than knowing and preparing.

Our son's Montessori teacher told us that our son is gifted. This was last September when he was 5. What's our next step? When will/should he tested?

Oh the web should help you as well. I don't know why I didn't think of this before but there are a lot of websites out there geared towards finding the information for Gifted Programs. Let me look through my notes and I''l make a list later today.
