Just added Dr. Ed Amend to the calendar - he is speaking at Sycamore GEAR on October 20 - Parenting Gifted Children - and it's free.

Yeah, my son loved that also! LOL...it was too cute, what he put in it! Now, I can't get him to stop drawing cartoons! He asked me today if we could go to the newspaper so he could put his cartoon in it! LMAO!!! I laughed so very hard....

I don't think the new Wimpy book comes out until October. My son loves those too. He especially liked the last one because he could fill it in himself.

Good Afternoon, Ladies!

Popping in to send some good vibes! About to go to the bookstore soon for my lil boo bear. He loves the Wimpy Kid series and I want to see if the new book is out yet. Did you know they had a Tales from the Crypt Wimpy Kid book? I was floored when I saw that...lol. Have any of you gone over the Wimpy Kid book series with your children? Savvy!

Done. I just went online and reserved the first of the series of each of the book series you suggested.

Ooh great idea Tangledmoon. Some of those sound like something Zack would be really interested in.

I can't wait for our closest library to reopen next month. Right now we have an express library where I can pick up what I reserve online, but it doesn't give the kids the opportunity to browse for what they like. I'm going to reserve some of the Tintin series and see if that clicks.

Zack also loves Calvin & Hobbes.

I forgot to mention another thing that came from the renewed interest she gained - the pendulum seemed to swing both ways. For all the new adventures and new chapter books, she also wanted to go back and read some of the beginning reader stuff on our bookshelf. I realized that she needs that too - somedays she *is* still just a little girl, and if that's what she wants to read, it's all available to her as well.

Hi everyone - joined ages ago, but have been hiding out.

I was reading backposts and wanted to offer a suggestion that has done wonder for us. Both my girls are gifted, but like many of you I have one who goes off reading for long spells. Grace is 8, and she used to go long spells where getting her to read was like pulling teeth.

Last summer, I got this idea in my head - I saw an upsurge in graphic novels in our Scholastic flyers, so I went and had a look at the library to see what sort of stuff they had. One of the features I found interesting was that there are a lot of the 'anime' and 'manga' style books out there - they are adventure stories, translated from Japanese, and the books themselves are read from right to left!

Can you imagine how much of an impact *that* had?? "I don't have to read it like all the rest?" - she was all over that! Some she reads for the humour, some for the serial storylines, some because they're about things she likes.

Not all the books are right-to-left reads. Here's alist of some of the series that made the biggest impact around here:

"Owly" by Andy Runton - there are 3 or 4 books in this series and there is no written dialogue. It got her thinking and talking.
"Tintin" - there are a HUGE amount of Tintin books - big adventures in lots of interesting locations.
"Calvin And Hobbes" - seriously. She loves them so much.
"Pokemon" - they have a couple of R-L series out and she's hooked.
"Bone" - this series is HUGE right now. A little dark, a big adventure - captivates her.

I searched "Graphic Novel" under the Subject field at my regional library, and there are 3000 different books available. Be sure to check for age levels - some of the series from Japan are designed for teen audiences and I wouldn't want Grace reading them.

hth :)

Sorry I don't stop by here much. Once school starts I'm sure we'll have lots to talk about!
