I agree with Gail. You are very fortunate that parents are helping. I am into my 7th year as a leader and finding a (good) assistant much less parents that will help!

And getting the girls (now Cadettes) to plan anything is like pulling teeth!

Gail the first meeting went fantastic. The girls had a blast. Our next meeting is Tuesday. I found my cookie mom already. The parents never left the meeting they stayed sat in the back and watched the girls and listened to my co leader talk about the product sale. I never knew it was going to be this much fun. My girls are so excited.

Dang Stacie, I'm jealous! I feel like I'm pulling teeth to get any of my parents involved. They're happy to help with trips & whatnot, but not cookies or meetings. Sounds like you'll have a great first meeting!

Gail I am so excited for this year. I handed out Parent Registration to almost all the moms that were there. I would love having the extra help. A couple even offered to do the product sales which was awesome. I can't wait for our first meeting next month.

Stacie if most are going to be staying have them do the background check and register them as volunteers! There are so many ways parents can help with meetings and that will take a lot of work off your shoulders, especially when cookie season starts (or fall products if you do those!). I would love to get more parents involved with my troop. I've been both leader AND cookie mom for 2 years now... it is exhausting! This year we asking all the parents to register and take on a more active role as I just can't continue to do it all this year.

Hi Ladies. This will be my first year as a Daisy Girl Scout Leader. Most of my parents are staying at the meetings so could I have suggestions how I can incorporate a meeting still and fill them in about product sale at the same time. I was going to have the girls work on name tags, decorating our supply bin and treat basket and work on a kaper chart. Any suggestions?

Hi All!

I work with Educational Equity Center, an educational non-profit that develops programs and curricula to promote bias-free learning. Our programs range from bullying prevention to promoting STEM (science, math, engineering, and technology) subjects to girls.

One of our current programs, funded by the National Science Foundation, is Science: It's a Girl Thing! We're specifically targeting girls in this program because women are greatly underrepresented in the fields of science and math, which is partly due to the fact our schools and culture often have a bias against encouraging girls in these subjects.

The goal is to help girls build an interest in science and a confidence in mastering it. The program consists of free, downloadable pdf activity cards of simple and fun science experiments that parents can do with their daughters (or you can do with your Girl Scouts). We promote these cards on our Facebook page at http://facebook.dj/scienceitsagirlthing, and we also Tweet about it at: www.twitter.com/girlsforscience.

We're reaching out to parenting websites and the "Mommy" blogging community to ask you to help us spread the word about the program. You can link to our Facebook site, or we can send you our pdf activity cards to download from your site. We also have 3 short videos demonstrating some of the activities in action. The videos are funny and entertaining, but they also illustrate the activities in action at various schools and after school programs.

Please feel free to visit our Facebook page, or for more information, email Linda Colon at: LColon@aed.org.

Best regards,
Zoe Kerrigan

HELLO it is all most time to get the girl scout back to duties and that is learning and having fun. Can you give me some of the things you all do when you start a new year. last year we started with 39 girls and ended with 21.

We just went on a camporee the weekend before last. The camp we rented had activities so it was easy to plan! However the forecast was iffy so I brought 3 ft sections of roap to practice knot tying, had the girls gather firewood and put up a tarp (to keep wood & a picnic table dry) and we brought string to learn macrame. Other than the wood gathering & tarp placement we didn't need to use the back up plan! We did do a nature hike and found some interesting things on our walk. You can always plan on leaf rubbings or looking for animal tracks.

Hi. I'm looking for suggestions for our upcoming Camporee. We're going on a nature hike. Any ideas on how to keep the girls engaged?
