twitter moms: the influential moms network

I'm relatively new to becoming a "green Mama" and one of the biggest things I want to change is our cleaner. I've used Clorox with bleach to clean in the kitchen, bathrooms, etc and would like to use an alternative - something safe for us and the environment, but something that really cleans.
Any recommendations? What do all of you use?

Thanks, Michelle

Yeah, seventh Generation uses peroxide, which you can also get with Clorox. The clorox brand is more expensive, I believe, than Seven Generation.

Oh, I am assuming you mean cleaning clothes. You cannot use the peroxide to clean your home because it burns your skin.

Hi Michelle,

I can relate because I used to use bleach for cleaning too. :) I like Mrs. Meyers All purpose cleaner. (I am partial to the lemon verbena scent) You can even use it on floors. I also am a fan of Natures Clean Products. They are non toxic and really effective, but they are Canadian and if you live in the US I think it is harder to find them. I have quite a few cleaning product recommendations on my blog of you are interested. http://mindfulmerchant.ca/. Good luck with the search!

I thought it was nutty until I tried it. I clean with vinegar. A 5% solution, which is straight out of the bottle, is a disinfectant. It cuts through soap sum on my shower doors and does wonders on mirrors. It also kills the ick on the tiles in my shower. I spray it with vinegar (I put an old spray nozzle right on a bottle of vinegar) and scrub it with a toothbrush- gone!

For the toilet I pour in a bit of baking soda (usually an expired box from the refrigerator) and pour in a bit of vinegar. The "volcano" works pretty well at cleaning although I hit with a toilet brush after the bubbling dies down t make sure I get everything.

I really like to use vinegar to clean my kitchen countertops since that's where I prepare food. It's nice that I can spray a cleaner to wipe up a spill when I'm cooking that won't harm my family.

WOW, I don't think I ever heard of using vinegar. It really does work to kill germs?? And baking soda and vinegar in the toilet sounds genius! LOL. And I'm sure that's cheaper than cleaning solutions too.....
I have heard of SEventh Generation, it's pretty popular although I've never tried it (I have used their dishwasher fluid though, it leaves residue on my glasses). I also hear good things about BabyGanics. It's all natural cleaning products that are safe around babies. I also use Method all natural cleaning solutions, I think they're only sold in Target though.

I found Shaklee cleaners to use in my home over 11 years ago. You may have seen them on Oprah. The line is called Get Clean. I love them so much I became a distributor and started sharing the message of creating healthier homes. It really fit with my chemical engineering background and it allowed me to stay home with our girls.
Shaklee has a natural brightener for laundry (nature bright) and other biodegradeable products to use throughout the home. They company has been around over 50 years making environmentally safe products. There is Basic-G, too. It's a disinfectant/deodorizer. (Since it kill a bunch of germs--it does come with a child-proof cap.)
What I love about the products--besides they work great--is that they don't smell up my house. The general cleaner, Basic-H2 has no fragrance---you can even get laundry products fragrance free--a great alternative for small children or anyone with allergies and/or eczema.
All the products are extremely concentrated. You can really save over purchasing store brands and other "green" cleaners. A 16 oz bottle of Basic H2 can make 48 gallons of general purpose cleaner, or 1456 gallons of window cleaner!
Let me know if you'd like more info. I'd be happy to help.

I think you should definitely find an alternative to Clorox since lots of people don't know this (since they aren't required to tell you) but a lot of chemicals used in these disinfecting products have been linked to health problems. I actually am working on a campaign to alert more moms of these potentially harmful effects. Would anyone here be interested in receiving more information on this in the coming months, and tweeting about it?

I've heard of baking soda and vinegar and although it does clean very well, it doesn't smell very good and it doesn't kill germs. i know of a great company that has all natural solutions to everyday cleaning and everyday health issues. They have been around for over 24 years and I use their products daily. They even have something that kills H1N1 virus.
