Thanksgiving is the perfect time for authentic writing for our children.
Authentic writing activities help with writing achievement. When children are involved with authentic writing for real life purposes they are writing for people outside of school.
Thanksgiving gives your child the authentic writing opportunity to write recipes, shopping lists, greeting cards, writing stories and poems.

Have your child be your family’s official Thanksgiving writer. Give your child a new journal and colored pencils, as a family sit around your table with mugs of warm apple cider and begin your plans.

Your child can:
• List who is going to be at your dinner.
• Write invitations to invite your guests.
• Read recipes and make a list of food needed.
• Make Greeting cards for family and friends that are far from home.
• Create Place cards for the table.
• Write stories, prayers, and poems to be read on Thanksgiving.

Learning to write well is one of your child’s most challenging tasks. It takes time, practice and lots of encouragement. Parents can help develop these life long skills, and create memories and the love of writing at the same time. Don’t forget to take a few pictures to slip into the journal for a lifetime of memories.

As your family prepares for Thanksgiving let your children become your family’s historian, journalist, memory keeper, your family’s writer.

Happy Writing,
R.R.Cratty

Although I am not a homeschooling mom, I am always on the lookout for great ideas to use with my children's education at home. Found some great free videos at DiscoveryEducation.com. Thought I could combine "computer time" with learning time and my kids won't know it!

Homeschool Moms, I need your help. I have a family member who wrote to me after reading a post on my blog. I had asked the question to everyone "Why Do You Homeschool" as a survey. She replied asking "Why Homeschool". I have many reasons, but so does everyone else. I am hoping you can all help me out with the answer. To give several different points of view. You can read her comment on my blog. I'd love to get your comments. It's a pretty loaded question. =0)
Thank you for your help.

Blessings ;)

What a fun group from all the comments! I homeschooled my girls K-12, and stayed involved in the homeschooling community after they graduated. I loved being a homeschool mom, and really miss it! My youngest daughter will be having a daughter in Janaury, and I hope to be able to help homeschool her.

New to the group, but not new to homeschooling. I am in my tenth year of schooling the kiddos. I have two in high school-( I homeschool the neighbor kid) and one in 5th grade. Wow, they grow up fast. Looking forward to learning and sharing with you all!
