My name is Charity and I am the proud mother of 4 children, Chris 21 a US Marine, Nick 20 a firefighter, Amanda 17 a college student and Marshall 12 a 6th grader. I also raised my neice Ariella 24 a college student. I have homeschooled all but Ariella at some point in their lives. All three older children graduated before 17 years and were enrolled in college. I am challenged with my sixth grader this time around. he is intelligent yet needs more interaction than my other children ever did. Living in the country it is hard to make "play dates" with other children. We belong to California Virtual Academy, an absolutely amazing school. All texts are provided along with art supplies, a computer and a 24/7 online instructor when needed.
We live in the Northern California Sierra Nevada Foothills.
I love home schooling because my son can experience more than he could in a brick and mortar school. We can think out of the box...explore...expand his mind.
I can't live wihtout my extremely intelligent best friend Maggie aka math coach and my husband John PE instructor... friends and family are the best tools when home schooling, hands down.
Thanks for this site, finally people that think like me!!! YEHA!

Hi, I'm new to homeschooling. My daughter just turned 15, so she's a sophomore. I've been looking for help online, so I'm soooooo happy to have found this group! My daughter's studying biology, algebra, reading Pride and Prejudice and zombies, and writing stories with help of the "alice" writing program from Carnegie Mellon.
Alice is a free software program that allows the user to apply video graphics and computer programing to a story. She also does Medical Explorers, a group of high school kids that go to Maine Med every Wednesday
and learn about a new area of the Medical field. I guess those two projects are the only tips I have.

I have a 10 year old son.

How do you homeschool?
I don't actually do much of the 'teaching' myself -- I cheat by signing him up for every museum class in town (we're lucky to have a ton of homeschooling-specific offerings here) and he spends about 8 hours a week with a friend who's a retired teacher (for math & language arts). That's a win-win -- he gets a great one-on-one education and she gets some non-social-security income.
I teach him biology. His dad fills in with math assistance.
Mostly, we're pretty 'eclectic' and good about finding teaching ops through the many activities that we engage in around town.

Where do you hang your book bag? (general area, no need to list your city and state, if you don't wanna)
Houston, TX

What do you love about Homeschooling?
the flexibility for our busy, fun schedules
that my son isn't spending most of his day with a gang of public schoolers
that my son has the op to learn what he wants to learn (and what I want him to learn)
that we can live outside of the box with his education, just as we do with the rest of our lives

Any good resources you can't live with out?
A friend has loaned me his unused, brand new Evolutionary Biology college textbook/computer-assisted curriculum. My 5th grader is learning college biology. It can happen!
The best resources have been our friends, many of whom are also homeschoolers in the area.

Hey, there! I'm Christine and I am a second generation homeschooler. I am the oldest of five, and my parents taught all of us at home, all the way through high school. I now have six kiddos, four of whom are "school age."

How old are your kids?
My twins are almost 8, my only daughter is 6, and I have a 4 yo, 2 yo, and 1 yo.

How do you homeschool?
I have taken the classical approach mostly, although we're pretty eclectic. I have used the Sonlight curriculum, with a bit of everything else mixed in! I am very blessed to have all of my mom's materials/books from years of collecting. :)

We're in Nor Cal, near Sacto

What do you love about Homeschooling?
I love the freedom and flexibility. I love being with my kids all day, teaching them about life and the world around them... The looks on their faces when they finally "get it" makes it all worth it!

Any good resources you can't live with out?
The internet and my online friends!
