Do you belong to a homeschool co-op?

What is your co-op like? What do you like/dislike about it?
I head up our local co-op. It is a lot of work. But my kids enjoy it a lot. They like learning from other moms who might have a different teaching style than I do. And I love the idea of my kids learning from people who love the subjects they are teaching. (Math is just NOT my thing. It would be hard for me to teach my kids to love it.) Not to mention it is another opportunity to engage in the S word! Socialization! We have a kids' Bible study and moms Bible study as part of our co-op day as well as gym, writing classes, algebra, Shakespeare, Spanish, etc. It is more planning/work for the moms, but I really think it is worth it overall. But since each day is different, that is likely to change. And change. And change. :) But we're committed to it for this term anyway!

Hi,
I'm new to homeschooling, we are just in our first year with our oldest son and he's in grade 1. What exactly is a co-op? It sounds interesting.

I have been homeschooling for about 9 years now, and I've been involved in many different types of co-ops, which have suited our needs during various seasons of life. But the co-op we're in now is absolutely wonderful! There are about 100 children (ages 0-18) in this Christian homeschool co-op. We meet on Friday mornings from 9am - 12pm and offer a variety of classes for the kids, all taught by the moms in the co-op.
Classes vary from semester to semester (based on the moms' desires for what classes we want our kids to take AND what classes the moms want to teach) ~ all grades have PE every week and all elementary grades have choir every week. Other classes this year include Spanish, recorder, handbells, computer programming, forensic science, drawing/art, worship band, math games, guitar lessons, newspaper, government, life skills, peacemakers, etc. (These are offered for elementary, jr. high, or high school ~ listed in no particular order...)
Yes, the best part for my 5 kids are the close friends they've made and the time they often spend playing with them at the park afterwards. ;D They get to experience Valentine's parties and bringing cupcakes on their birthday and some of the fun things that we don't want them to miss out on by not being in school.
There are many, many different options for co-ops in our area, and probably in many areas around the country. A national site like www.hslda.org can help you find out what is available where you live. I recommend it! Ü

In our area there are two different "types" of co-op's. One large one that meets 2x per month and a variety of subjects may be taught. The more popular type though seems to be the "small group" co-op's where a group of mom's get together weekly and share in the teaching of the topic. We have been in a variety of them:
Science, History, Composition, Speech, learning Science through K'Nex, Art, Drama, Literature and History. We have organized and participated in mini-sessions that meet for 4-6 weeks and have done a study on The History of the U.S. Flag, The election process, Whales, Bats, Insects, Preparing for Easter. Lots of unit studies out there. Amanada Bennett unit studies, Steward Ship unit studies at unitstudies.com .
Somehow, meeting in smaller groups works well, though I have also done the big group thing too.
Hope this helps. I feel like the Co-op queen sometimes but it works great for us!
