I am not homeschooling yet. I wanted to homeschool my oldest but wasn't able to be at home with her. She is now a freshman and boy do I wish I had homeschooled her.

My boys are 3 and 1 and my 3 year old has classic autism. He is fairly mild, but his communication delays are pretty severe, almost totally non-verbal and while he is progressing daily, he still only understands a handful of verbal commands. Our experiences with the local early intervention program & preschool are far from stellar, and even before his diagnosis I was considering homeschooling him and his brother.

So I am wondering if anyone here has homeschooled a child with autism.

I would also love to connect with anyone in South Dakota about homeschool laws... particularly if the school will still be required to offer him therapies (speech, etc) if he is homeschooled as I forsee him needing at least speech for years to come.

Courtney,

Read The Gift of Dyslexia, by Ron Davis. Both of my children are dyslexic and have been through the program offered in this book, by a Davis Facilitator in my state. Helped them tremendously. They also have an Autism program that you may find interesting/helpful.

I homeschool both of my children. We are into our 9th year and doing great. We have successfully addressed their learning disabilities because 1) I was able to find treatment for their issues, and 2) I could tailor their curriculums to address their strengths and weaknesses.

There are lots of resources out there for you. The hard part is sifting through them to find the right one for your children.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info! I will look into the books and see what I can find about that program as well.

From what I can tell, the school would still provide therapies, but I would need to take him there for them. Not a big deal.

Hopefully that is true! Although I have been very involved with his therapies and his therapists always said "gosh, you could do this yourself!" But I think that is because I had their guidance, I just did lots of "homework" with him.
