twitter moms: the influential moms network

I am involved in the planning of the support group activities for my group. I would love to hear about any kind of interesting co-op classes, field trips, and mom's encouragment ideas?

Thanks for the list! I love the Whole Foods tour idea.

I don't know if it's helpful but I'll list all the field trips or events we've done with our group over the last two months:

paint your own pottery
cooking class at Young Chefs Academy (it's a chain, see if there is one near you)
nutritional tour of Whole Foods market (this was very fun, we got a TON of snacks!)
organic dairy farm tour
theater show
went to the student day for Colorado Symphony
pumpkin farm
Halloween bowling party
art class
historical cemetery tour

Some things we have participated in:

board game group (we reserved a room at the library and everyone brought their own board games)

Trunk or Treat (Halloween - instead of going Trick or Treating, we got permission to use a church parking lot. All cars pulled in to form a large circle with their trunks/backs of their cars pulled into the center. The kids had a safe place - inside the circle - to trick or treat and parents went all out decorating their cars. One mom even brought a crock pot rigged up to the electricity in her van to serve warm apple cider!)

Museums - of course! And Park Days

Touring old cemeteries and doing gravestone rubbings

Tae Kwon Do classes

Our co-op had an American Girls club where they read books and had discussions. My boys weren't interested (go figure!)

Ice skating party

science fair - we held it in a school cafeteria. Each child who signed up did their own project. We invited people from the community to come and judge. One judge was the local high school science teacher (who was incredibly impressed!)

Used book sales (with bake sale on the side)

Also - it's always good to find out the skills of other parents in the group. One of our parents taught knitting and the girls eventually learned to make baby items for charity and caps for those going through chemo. One father hosted soccer camps. Another mom did art classes. I taught creative writing classes.

Another good idea is to check out VolunteerMatch.org. You can search by location and find results that are marked as being appropriate for children and groups. If you find a good volunteer activity for the group, take your camera along and take lots of photos and then submit them to your local newspaper!!

Our group has a mom's night out every month that we all look forward to enormously. No talking about children allowed unless it's hilarious.

Our co-op has some interesting classes. I teach a literature class for kids ages 6-9, and we've studied Treasure Island and the Odyssey, now we're moving on to Arabian Nights. We have a high school history course called "From Rebels to Founders: The Journey to the US Constitution" where the kids are creating a charter document for our co-op. You can see our co-op here: http://www.hsobx.org
