twitter moms: the influential moms network

I am checking out 'The Well Trained Mind' and 'Charlotte Mason', along with several other methods. Just wondering what everyone else is using and why?

Check out Reggio Emilia ideas and other community-based ideas (e.g. by Davis Albert).

Peg, we are eceletic but Charlotte Mason enthusiasts by heart. Our core curriculum is Sonlight which we adjust, crop and add to as we need.

I really have to read each one to see what will 'fit'. My SIL lives in Arizona and will be homeschooling all her kids, so she chose the K12 curriculum: http://www.k12.com/curriculum_and_products/schooling_programs/onlin...

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE WTM....it totally connects w/ my daughter and has opened up the world for her. We do a lot of Charlotte Mason "type" things like TONS of reading but in the context of a classical education the reading has meaning. Like yesterday we were reading Aesop's Fables and there was a great introduction that explained WHO Aesop was, WHEN he lived, WHY he was important, WHAT he did, and WHERE he lived. Who knew?? I certainly had NEVER learned all that but because my daughter now has a very STRONG ancicent history background she could put Aesop "in his place" so to speak and his stories could then have context in her mind. I just think the classical framework is a very powerful construct from which chidlren can learn ANYthing.

Just so you know the "K-12 curriculum" is not technically homeschooling and is not protected by homeschooling laws and regulations in the U.S. It is still technically a part of the public school system. Check out Home School Legal Defense Association for more info.

Have been homeschooling for 6+ years and use core Sonlight programs for History, Readers and read-alouds. We do Apologia Science with a small (8 kids) co-op each mom teaching 2 to 3 times. Composition-
Institute for Excellence in Writing, again in a small co-op. Spelling- Phonetic Zoo. Handwriting- A reason for Handwriting. We formed a chess class and small art class, hiring for a small fee a teacher, DH also teaches a mechanical science class meeting 2x per month. Love finding other moms to do small 4-6 topical units studies for example: the election process, preparing for Easter.

We read living books for all history and supplement for science as well.

Hope this helps.

yes, I found that out about the K12, thanks.

I am choosing A Well Trained Mind, mixed w/ Charlotte Mason and whatever else works.

Thanks for your replies.

Peg, just ran across 'Charlotte Manson' (CM) on a blog I visit. I am a retired educator (actually, a school librarian) and now help my oldest daughter find resources for her home school effort of my three grandchildren. I have never heard of CM but it looks interesting. A little like Hirsch's Core Knowledge (CD). I am familiar with CK but not so much with CM. From my initial glance CM has a "spiritual" element to it.

I love "The Well Trained Mind" and Charlotte Mason. We have been very eclectic with curriculum, but have now decided on "Tapestry of Grace." TOG seems to utilize all of the concepts we love from classical and Charlotte Mason methods.
