Hi all. I just did a blog post "What I Would Want a Mother of a Typical Needs Child to Know" http://www.lipstickwisdom.com/2009/09/15/what-would-i-want-a-mother-of-a-typical-needs-child-to-know/

It has gotten a good response from my readers so I thought you might want to see it and think about it. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Best,
Karen

Sarah,

My son has ADD (recently diagnosed). I talk about my experiences at www.lipstickwisdom.com. I have also started to create a virtual directory of other bloggers who share their experiences with ADHD. There is some great information out there. Also you should check out adhdparentingsuccess.com. Her child had ODD -- apparently quite severe -- and ADHD. Debra is sharing her knowledge from direct experience (she has free content and paid content) -- I am not connected with her at all -- I am just telling you this as a potential source of information.

Check out my blog and the virtual directory of bloggers at lipstickwisdom.com -- it might help.

Hang in there -- we are all fighting the good fight together. It is not easy but there is some great information that can help you along the way!

Hi! I have a 4 year old who was recently diagnosed with ADHD and ODD and would love to have some people to chat with about it! I don't know anyone else experiencing what we are as far as their children's behavior and it would be great to be able to discuss!

Does any one think there is a strong corolation between adopted children and ADHD?

Hello everyone,

I am making good progress identifying a ADHD therapist that works within our health care program (!!). Any advise for me in working with a therapist?

Thanks,
Karen

Tracy,

My son puts his shirts in his mouth when he is totally stressed out too!! New recently is that he has discovered his "eye teeth" and can completely destroy a shirt in about 2 minutes. I saw it with my own eyes a couple of weeks ago to get him allergy tested (he hates doctors and get completely freaked out.).

I will keep karate in mind -- it might be a great idea for my son!!

My son will be in summer session for school for 5 weeks! And then it is August and we tend to try to do very little during August ... although that strategy does tend to make the transition to September a little rough :-)

I just thought I would pop in with a short update on my son. Tomorrow is his last day of third grade. I can't believe how fast this school year went by!!

Normally around this time of year I begin to worry (something I have a tendency to do too much of) about what next year will bring...who will his teacher be, will she be a good fit for Ethan, etc.

A few weeks ago I got the opportunity to speak at length with his second grade teacher at a school function. His second grade teacher is very special to me because she is the one who reversed all of the anxiety that his first grade teacher left him with. She really did wonders for Ethan. She told me that of the 4 fourth grade teachers in the school there was not one that she felt would be a bad fit for Ethan. She felt that he would be able to excel with any of them.

That made me feel a lot better because when it came time for her to place him with a third grade teacher she was very honest that she specifically chose the teacher that he had this past year because she felt that there were others that would not be a good fit for him. I trust her and because she told me that I feel like I can relax and enjoy the summer and let fourth grade come!

We also finished up the soccer season and together we decided that he will not play again next year. There were just too many "issues" that were difficult for him to overcome with his fear of bees, weather issues, frustration, etc. Sports are supposed to be fun and if he is not having fun I am not going to force him to do it.

Instead, we signed him up for karate classes which he started last week. So far he seems to love them! The classes focus on all of the things that kids with ADHD need a little extra help with.....focus, self-respect, self-esteem, discipline, etc. The website for the karate school has a whole page dedicated to why karate is great for kids with ADHD. So, we'll see how that goes over the summer.

I also touched base with our pediatrician to find out about taking Ethan off of his meds for the summer. When he was on the stimulant meds he always suggested that we take him off for the summer to re-assess. I was not sure how he felt about the Straterra because it is not like the stimulants....it needs to build up in the system and must be taken daily to be effective. He still advocated taking him off, but stressed that if we put him back on he will need to start at least a month before school starts to leave enough time for the meds to build up in his system.

One interesting thing that I have noticed since taking him off the Strattera is that he is putting the collar of shirt in his mouth again....that is one of the anxiety issues that he picked up in first grade and I have not seen him do that in over a year! It seems to be more of a habit thing rather than a stress thing and if I tell him to get his shirt out of his mouth he just takes it out without any drama so that is good. Maybe we can just break him of the habit.

Anyway, I am looking forward to a relaxing summer and hoping that the karate classes will give him a positive boost to feel really great about himself so he can start fourth grade with a new-found confidence.

What are your plans for the summer?
