Hi Ladies,

My kids (7 and 9) have been showing some interest in my knitting. I was thinking about putting together a simple knitting project for them for part of their Christmas stuff. Should I do regular needles, or one of those knitting machine things? Anyone have kids that knit? What do they like to use? Are there any good books anyone could recommend for the kids? Thanks!

I learned to crochet at 4 and I have taught 6 year olds and up to knit. I'd got with regular needles. Looms are pretty nifty too. The knitting machines at AC Moore and the like, I've heard they are pretty unreliable.

I recommend two kid's knitting books. Sasha Kagan's Ready, Set, Knit (for instructions) and Melanie Falick's Kids Knitting (for projects). Sarah Bradberry's Kids Knit! isn't bad either.

you could also try finger knitting. My daughter does this. She's 8. I had to go out and buy more yarn as she knitted all of mine into scarves! :)

All three of my children knit (son, 10; daughter 7; and son 5 is just learning w/o help!), and taught kids to knit at my LYS. I homeschool & every year I require a service project. If you are on Ravelry, there is a group making simple 6x6" squares to send to someone who will sew them together to make blankets for those in need. If you are on Ravelry, PM me & I'll send you the link to the group.

I second this recommendation...Great book! Easy projects, and ones that appeal to kids.

My girls (9 and 11) are knitters. They made scarves first and moved onto bigger projects - blankets and fleted purses. They LOVE knitting.

At our Library I started some knitting classes for children and started a Knitting Club called Yarn Busters. I teach knitting and my assistant teaches crochet. It has been very successful. There are a few blog entries about Yarn Busters on my blog http://whatidoatthelibrary-eformanator.blogspot.com/ We have fun, will have a big gathering in June for Yarn Busters and people in the community that knit or crochet. Will have another round of classes in October. In the mean time we have one club meeting each month. Here are some photos.
