What is your ethnicity?
I was born in Peru and am fluent in Spanish. Recently my husband and I traveled to Peru along with our daughter. She had a great time meeting the rest of her family for the first time!

PR? That's great! I just borrowed a Puerto Rican cookbook from a friend because I never learned how to cook PR food and I really love it. I'm going to make a couple recipes this week and I can't wait. It looks so simple but I definitely see why the flavor is different based on the ingredients.

Does it count if I was born here? My parents and my husbands parents are from Mexico. So we are mexican-american. We are both fluent in spanish as it was our first language. We currently speak both english and spanish to our son. My sister did this with my niece and she learned both languages and was never confused.

I was born here in Los Angeles, my parents are both Mexican and am fluent in spanish. My husband is polish and italian and does not speak either. So my two boys have lots of spice in them.

I was born in San Antonio, Texas but as far as I know from my family history...my grandparents were descendents from Mexico. It wasn't till I got older...that I really embraced my heritage. I am brown and proud now!!!!

Brown and Proud? LOL Why is it that we embrace our heritage when we get older? I'm the same way. Now that I'm older I want to preserve what I remember and pass those things on to my little girl. Thank you for sharing!

I went to Mexico for the first time in May. We were near Cancun on vacation and I just loved it. The people were so genuine and warm. They reminded me of my Peruvian peeps. God-willing, we'll go back in December. My husband travels to Puebla on business a few times per year and this time he's taking an extra week so we can go back to the gorgeous Riviera Maya. I never thought I'd go to Mexico twice in the same year but we had a blast.

Found it very easy though to adapt to speaking english, it's true when you're a kid you pick up things so quickly.

That's great! My best friend is Mexican-American and she doesn't know Spanish. She told me she signed up for her local Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and felt left out because she didn't speak the language. Her parents stuck to English and she wishes they hadn't. Thanks for posting!

Hi everyone!! My family is Italian but I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Hubby (Boricua & Chinese) and I met in the Catholic University in Ponce and we had our children in that same city. Hubby is in the military so have lived everywhere but right now we are stationed in Ft Buchanan, Puerto Rico so we are just enjoying our homeland for the time being!

Mary, I can relate to your best friend. My parents did the same, but they claim their Spanish wasn't very good. I've taken classes and tried to stick with it, but hard as an adult even though I live near a spanish speaking community.

Hello, I'm a native Californian, born in Los Angeles. My Dad is Mexican and my Mom is Mexican-Philipino although both are from the States. My husband is from Ireland, that makes our daughter with a interesting contrast of cultures.
