I have no idea why/if i should join twitter!

i am an author busy promoting my book, which also has a blog. i also have a self growth blog which i need to promote. i still dont 'get' twitter even though i've read lots about it. who can explain it to me?! i see it as an interuption and saying something for the sake of it!? what advice do you have for me? should i join and follow some ppl to see what its all about?

I didn't get Twitter until I downloaded Tweetdeck. Then all was clear to me. You should join and then using Tweetdeck you can see everyone who talks about your book or the topic of your book. It's a great way to be a part of the conversation.

Twitter is not only a great way to promote your book but also a great way to promote your blogs. Everytime you post a new entry on your blog zip on over to twitter and do a quick message like....Just updated my blog with a new post titled "whatever the title is" give it a read here: then insert the link to your blog post.
It will take you five minutes to do and you are only allowed 140 characters so it has to be short but sweet.

I agree with Chefdruck and Suzanne ... Twitter can be a means of just keeping in touch with others; it's a great source of breaking news and a very good source of traffic to your blogs. Twitter give you the opportunity to get your name/brand, your work out there to potentially tens of thousands of people. :)

It doesn't seem to make sense in the beginning because you won't have many followers. But when you get 200 people reading your tweets and when you reply to someone, everyone following THEM sees your tweets, suddenly you realize you have an audience.
It is kind of a time suck but I love it.

I just signed up with Twitter and didn't get it. I looked into Tweetdeck but haven't downloaded it yet; I wasn't sure of it. Thanks for the advice ~ I'll download it now. What do you think of Tweetergetter? I've been reading a little about it; and again, I'm not sure of it.

Just my two cents...I prefer to find and follow my OWN people. I had TOO many weirdo's with the whole 'Tweetergetter' thing--and that's being polite! I agree with the other posts that Tweetdeck is an essential tool if you want to get the most out of twitter. Can anyone explain hash tags? I've got a vague idea what they're about, but could tweetdeck help me keep track of them? How do I find the tags? I've seen them on people I follow... I've just been at this for a few weeks!

I'm struggling with this Twitter thing too, but one thing I can tell you, is that if you register your blog with Twitterfeed, then it automatically gets posted each time you have a new blog post. So, that will save those five minutes.

I've heard people complain about tweeters who only post when they have something to promote. I like to post my own stuff by hand, so I can write something personal about it.
If you use Twitter, make sure you also do some social posting. Make a few friends and toss stuff back and forth. Comment on other people's post. Look like a human!
Switching topics: if you're wanting to increase your followers quickly, try using Mr. Tweet. (http://mrtweet.net/) You follow Mr. Tweet like a person, then the site will offer you advice. It will analyze your stats, giving you a percentage of how much you link, have conversations and how frequently you post.
But the really cool part is that Mr. Tweet will recommend 200 tweeters you might want to follow, based on people you already know. You have to add each one individually, but that lets you review each profile to see if you want them. It gives a quick bio on each person, how you're connected to them and their Twitter stats.
And, did you know that way at the bottom of the Twitter page there's a little tiny button for "search"? You can search for your city or interest and find people you might want to follow that way.
The more you follow, the more who follow you!
