twitter moms: the influential moms network

Are you looking for a moms group in your area and don't know where to start? Let's post some ideas on finding one or starting one.
I think a big way to find one is word of mouth--hitting local libraries story times, talking to moms at the park, etc. Most libraries have story times which is a great place to meet moms close that have kids your age. Any other suggestions?

Oh and MOMs Club International is another place to look. http:/www.momsclub.org you can give them your address and zip and someone will let you know if there is a chapter in your area to join.

I've looked in a lot of different places, and some times it's interesting where you can discover your information.

One thing I've started doing is making sure to go to a place like your local grocery store at the beginning of every month and pick up a copy of the free parenting magazines and/or local events cataloges if they have them. Most all of those have great adds for local events and kid-related businesses, and a lot of them also have a listing of the local Mom's groups close by your locations.

Another great place for word of mouth... sitting around in the pediatrician's office!

Simple searches on the web can turn up a few good finds too. There are a few sites that list local mom's clubs & playgroups. If you have a club/playgroup you can also request to have yours added to their list. Here's a few links:

I host a mom's club for moms in the Kansas City area. Promoting a mom's club can be hard work, and the thing that surprised me is there's a lot of competition between mom's clubs. If you have club of your own, promote online in as many places as you can, post an ad on craigslist, myspace, facebook, etc. Make fliers and post them around town. Get business cards and hand them out to your mommy friends at the park, etc.

I started a moms club in my area in partnership with a local women's magazine. I provided the organizational muscle and they provided the initial advertising to get it off the ground.

I use ClubExpress.com to manage the membership. Club Express charges a small fee per member per month and it is so worth it because they manage all the collection of dues, reminder emails about dues, automatic addition of new members to the chat forum and removal of expired members from the private areas of the club website that are for members only. They provide the chat forum, calendar, email/newsletter tools, search engine optimization tools so people searching the web for a club can find you easily. Club Express makes it SO easy. I highly recommend using their service if you plan on starting a moms club that charges a membership fee.

And, by the way, I strongly recommend charging a membership fee. It gives the club the money it needs to do advertising to continue to attract new members. Also, when people make that purchasing decision they tend to be much more active in the club than when they join a club for free. Our club charges $30/year. The San Francisco Moms Club (Golden Gate Mothers Group) charges $50/year (I think. Maybe $60.) M.O.M.S. Club International chapters usually charge around $30/year. But to charge a fee you need to give value by being VERY organized. Have playgroups and events organized and communication systems set up so all people have to do is join and participate.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions. I'd be happy to share my experiences to help you get your own club started.
