Welcome to Mom's Doing Daycare!

Please introduce yourself, where you live, and the ages of your own & your daycare kids. Doing daycare is one of the toughest jobs there is, and it's vital to have a supportive network to help us be the best we can be at what is also one of the most important jobs in the world.

Feel free to start a discussion on anything and everything from dealing with parents, kid troubles, craft & activity suggestions, logistical problems (car rides, walks to school, etc) to your personal sick leave & vacation policies and living life in Munchkinland!

A commonplace of political rhetoric has it that the quality of a civilization may be measured by how it cares for its elderly. Just as surely, the future of a society may be forecast by how it cares for its young.

Greetings
child care services, 24/7 that is. This is coming into my 3rd year. We have our web site. I have run into problems of licensing with my 'neighbors'. There is a church in 1/4 of a mile down from my house and they were a big component in my not getting licensed (I was at the zoning office when they called). I have tried contacting via phone, letter to no response. I am a certified child care director and will try again. I do look forward to fulfilling my goals toward moving my business to a commercial building.
I told my parents that within the 3 years that I would work towards removing 60% of errors. I recently encountered a 'mom' that was "messy"- she skipped out. When I sent certified letter to here, she text some accusations. I text one word 'untrue'. She stated she would pay, to date has not. She left her infant child's belongings (which I cataloged). In the certified letter I stated that I am not accustomed to keeping a child's belongings and I don't plan on being accustomed to that as it is not fair to the child. I have the bag of belongings in my foire (excuse my misspelling of) still waiting for her to pick them up (this has been since July). My parents have agreed with her being "messy" and are willing to attest to my services. I even have one parent that will volunteer from time to time, who will attest to my services.
I guess this was a time to exhale the pangs of the business.

I hope to have assistance from you guys in this type of business and how you keep the training going.

take care

It's a huge issue across the nation. Unfortunately those who make those decisions with their votes aren't often members of young working families and don't understand how critical child care funding is and are too willing to make cuts in that area. It's truly sad that our country doesn't put a higher value on quality child care.

@melissa
Here in California the funding needed to keep the subsidies going didn't pass in our special election last month, and so yes the daycares that take those families are going to lose them. I know of 2 that may have to shut down completely.

JUST WONDERING IFANYONE HAS HEARD THAT THEY ARE REDUCING THE HELP FOR FAMILIES THAT NEED HELP PAYING FOR DAYCARE. IF SO, I'LL BE LOSING ALOT OF MY FAMILIES IF THEY CAN'T RECEIVE HELP PAYING FOR THEIR DAYCARE.

I currently babysit (daily 7am-4pm) in a families home for their children 4 and 2 and one due in August. I've been thinking about starting something in my own home but not sure if it will be profitable enough to do. I currently make $100.00 a day but can I charge that amount if I watch the children in my own home? I live on Long Island in New York and know daycare is expensive but how expensive? Any input would really be appreciated.

yep, good plan. you need to make a living. so if the spots are filled, she will have to start a new daycare search.

well, i discussed the pay with the teacher-parent during the summer today, and she said that she will take her chances, and not pay for her spots. I guess I'll just put my ad back in the local paper, and hope to get those spots filled.
Tonya Comment by Tonya on May 18, 2009 at 7:49am
Teacher's pay is half pay during the summer to keep the spot. And if the teacher-parent decides to use you a day here or there through the summer, then she tops up that day to full day pay, so paying the other half for that day.
Meghan Comment by Meghan on May 18, 2009 at 7:24am
Melissa,
Protocol says that she should pay you for the spot over the summer. How much though is up to you. I've never gone through this myself, but I've known 2 providers who ran into it with mom's going on maternity leave with a 2nd child. One provider charged the mom half price while the other charged full price to her mom. (Both only charged a deposit for the new baby's spot). So really it's about what you can afford to offer. You're well within your right to charge her whatever you see fit. You have to live too. :-)
