twitter moms: the influential moms network

So, I'm exhausted, how about you?

:)

Seriously, I teach early childhood, and the school year just started. Getting up earlier in the morning, pouring personal energy into my teaching AND parenting, I am utterly, utterly tired by about 5 PM and then I start watching the clock till bath-and-bedtime. I am absolutely out of energy for my creative projects right now - and I just finished a record, so I'm cutting myself a little slack here, but still. I have a quilt I want to finish! Usually I subscribe to the crop-rotation theory of creativity, where if I'm stuck with a song, I'll go draw with pastels or crochet for a minute and it frees up my juice. At the moment, however, all I feel like doing is rocking the internet and eating macaroni and cheese...

How do you guys recharge your creative batteries?

My name is Dawn, I am an artist / muralist / faux finisher out of NY. I am also a mother of 3 children under the age of 4.

Getting recharged is so important as an artist. I am always looking for ways to keep my creative juices flowing. I am so grateful to have a job where I can be creative on a daily basis.

But personally, I try recharge by helping others be creative. I often help my church by re-doing their bulletin boards or help a friend get organized in her home, or sit with my little ones and mold things out of playdo. It changes on a weekly basis.

But I also believe that "rocking the internet" can also be a great way to recharge depending on what you are doing. I enjoy blogging about my area of work, researching, and networking with others.

You know, for one thing, I think you really have to applaud yourself for doing all that you do. It would be exhausting if you didn't work outside the home, assuming that your children are young...? Anyway, I can understand how you're finding it difficult to recharge. Teaching takes so much energy and adrenaline all day long. Maybe this is your resting season to let your brain rejuvenate.

As for me, I think it's being mindful of when my most creative times are. Mine is usually early morning, so I'll try and do creative things for myself on Saturday. I work full-time as a designer and then come home and freelance, so I'm finding that I need to pay attention to my best creative times and make sure I give myself permission to work on my own things during my high energy times once a week. Great question for creatives!

I take time to myself doing my own thing, whether it's crafting, playing music, cleaning, shopping, or walking in the park.

Adding exercise into your routine is both a stress reliever and an energizer! Young kids? Pop 'em in the stroller and head out for a brisk walk. Most kids think it's funny for mom to push them fast in the stroller! If that doesn't work, ask dad if he'll do kid duty for 30 minutes while you exercise. It really makes a tremendous difference. Hope you're back on top of your game soon! ;o)
