Have you had to give up your love of something you were doing for your children?

I had a very sucessful dance studio for many years I was the choreographer for all the school plays, and ran a summer arts camp for over 100 kids every summer and everything was on the high when I discovered I was pregnant for the third time and I was in a place in life where I thought I was done with that part of my life. My other two children were 15 and 11 at the time and things were actualy getting easier. Dont get me wrong I absolutely love my two year old and I dont regret having him he is truly a blessing. I'm an older mom "42" and I love the chance I got to do this all over again. But I do miss my old life. I am involved a little for dance I have a middle school dance team and my daughter now 12 is on a top notch dance team so we travel a lot for her dancing but I am just struggling with where I lost my "old life" have any of you moms had to give up your love of something for your family and how do you feel about it..any regrets?

I can empathize completely! I spent a long time trying to figure out my next adventure when my daughter started school. I took the time to pursue something I had always had on my 'to do list' and it has turned into what is now my business. I started taking an art class once a week. Painting was something I had always wanted to explore and I found that just taking that class opened up my creative channels again. I used the knowledge I gained in class and started fooling around with painting in chocolate. My company, Art By Chocolate was the result. We design and create flowers and leaves out of gourmet chocolate and...here's the art class part....we create all of our own color blends. So clients can choose a flower style and we'll create the color or combination of their choice. We also work with silver and gold flakes and metallic dusts!

I find I am using everything I learned in my past professional life (TV commercial producer) to build my business. I feel incredibly grateful that I didn't put off taking that art class. I'm having an amazing time with my little entity and I finally get to be the artist!

The first project I ever did while experimenting was for my daughter's school. The reaction I got was so positive that I realized I could actually make a business of it. So, yes, having the responsibility of being a parent closed one door; but opened up the most amazing window. You just never know. Life is a lot longer than we realize and time doesn't have to run out on your dreams.

You'll still have time to integrate the dance business--maybe you'll do something completely different with it when you return and it'll be better than ever!

i do miss the fact that i cant just go and paint or go and do some knitting or making clothes on a whim anymore, thats been hard to get used to and sometimes I'm just too tired to do it in the evenings so theres loads of projects i want to do but end up an the back burner. But our daughter turns 3 next month and starts nursery in the fall so theres just our son to worry about.
Although saying that when I do get something done/made etc, I do feel very proud of my work. Just wish I could sell them hehe.
I do miss sleeping in though I worked out that in almost 3 years I have had 1-3 sleepins later than 7am.
