Tips for Teaching Boys to Write

Children's book author, Ralph Fletcher has a few ideas. What keeps boys from putting pen to paper? What's getting in the way? First, identify the kids, mostly boys, with what teachers call "poor grapho-moter skills" but what we know as bad handwriting. Second, allow boys plenty of choices when it comes to what they want to write about. Third, allow students to use visual clues, drawing, arrows and signs when making the transition from drawing to prose. Fourth, teachers should develop appreciation of the way in which boys write. Finally, tolerance is a must. If we want boys to write, we must be prepared to tackle some difficult topics. Too often teachers look at boys' writing as if it were a problem to be managed.

Fletcher's book is Boy Writers: Reclaiming Their Voices. Notes above are from Peg Tyre's book The Trouble with Boys. Join Junior on Nov 10, 2009 at 8PM EST for an exclusive online Townhall Meeting. www.summitseriesforfamilies.com.

Junior, the publication about bringing up successful boys to host Townhall Meeting with Award-winning Journalist Peg Tyre

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 8:00 PM EST

Journalist and writer Peg Tyre is a prize-winning investigative reporter and the author of the controversial and widely praised book The Trouble With Boys: A Surprising Report Card on Our Sons, Their Schools and What Parents and Educators Must Do Tyre spent two decades in journalism, as a magazine feature writer at New York magazine, a newspaper reporter at New York Newsday, an on-air correspondent for CNN and most recently, as a long time staff writer for Newsweek, covering social trends and education. Between 2001 and 2008, she pursued her passion: examining the fault lines in American culture formed by class, gender, race, ideology and upbringing for the national weekly. Praised for being "analytical," "often counterintuitive" and "not afraid to take on society's sacred cows," Tyre's cover stories were top sellers at the magazine. She was twice nominated for a National Magazine Award (the industry equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize) received two Clarion Awards as well as sharing the Overseas' Press Club Ed Cunningham Prize for magazine feature writing. She was also honored by the Education Writers Association. She has discussed her stories on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox & Friends, Anderson Cooper and NPR (Boston).
New York Times best-selling writer Michael Thompson, co-author of Raising Cain, has called it "passionate, powerful and persuasive." Dr. Mel Levine, author of A Mind at a Time, called it "vital." He wrote, "Boys have their troubles and The Trouble With Boys sensitively reveals them." James Garbarino, author of Lost Boys, says The Trouble with Boys "Changes the way we look at something we thought we understood.

Hands-on, active learning is very important for boys. Books are great, the content is great, but books alone do not best serve boys. Boys need to hold, weigh, move and measure their surroundings. They need to explore real objects with mass, texture and dimension. Hands-on learning is crucial for helping many boys stay engaged in learning. It bypasses verbal challenges and merges visual and tactile senses, creating a gateway to new concepts. Read more in an issue of Junior, the magazine about bringing up successful boys. We will feature an interview with Lise Eliot, Phd, author of Pink Brain/Blue Brain.
